Try stopping and soaking in the environment. Let the air chill you. Smell the autumn decay and crisp scents on the sharp wind. Bask in the odd glow of streetlamps. Watch cars dart by on distant streets.

Go places you haven't gone before. Take your time. Think of the age of the trees and houses, how the city you live in expanded and how there are older and more ancient lanes with aged houses. Those are my favorite, up in the hills near Prospect Park, or near Coldwater where the first settlements in the area were.

you might be channeling some of the same dreams and thoughts he had. He loved to wander the night, but doing so would never feel the same as they would in the novel realm of dreams. Even though he was a materialistic atheist, he seemed to enjoy our spectral otherworld.
