How do I be a good friend to someone with depression?
Take him out for a walk, somewhere with lots ofnature

well, it's a girl and I don't see her often. Mostly talk on the phone, see each other every couple weeks.

Change "him" for "her" then...

she got in a car accident a month ago and can't walk long distances until her concussion heals

Throw that bitch in a wheelchair and go for a nice walk, push her around and get ice cream. Bitches love ice cream
Just don't let them feel like they're forgotten. Stay in touch. Ask how she is. Try to get her out of the house when you can. Keep doing things together as you were normally before the accident.

DO NOT keep telling her to cheer up or it's all in her head.
DO be there for her. Human contact is healing in itself.
DO listen sympathetically to her tales of woe. Offer practical suggestions (not just general "buck up" encouragement) when you can.

As a psychologist myself (and also someone suffering from depression - oh, the irony), I cannot do anything else but to say absolute YES to this post. Also, try showing (not suggesting) the possibilities of taking part in psychotheraphy (main "healing" factor) with the support of drugs.

Carry her around like a baby bird.
