my answer is that there is no line. i stayed with her for 3 years. although she wasn't that clingy. but she dumped me.

Normally, I'd only stay if the relationship balanced out and was therefore worth maintaining.
Once that scale tips in the wrong direction, I'm making it very clear of where I stand so she can choose to make a change or not.
