You can learn everything you need to know by lurking until you get it. You've probably already noticed that the the site's divided into different boards for different topics. Find a topic that interests you and hang out there. Don't post anything, just read. Every board has their own culture and they are quick to recognize those who don't fit in. Learn what's expected of you and how to fit in with the culture by lurking and you'll have a much better time.

Don't understand a meme or an in-joke? You're probably better off just lurking more or trying to find the answer elsewhere. Being unhelpful and shitting on people who ask honest questions about 4chan culture is a time-honored tradition.

The #1 piece of advice I can give you other than Lurk More, is ignore the name field. It's a trap. Anonymity is the default state and most people prefer if everyone keeps it that way. 99% of the time it's inappropriate to post with a name or, even worse, a tripcode and people will be justified in shitting on you if you use one.
