Its my birthday in the next few days. I hate being the center of attention so birthdays aren't entirely enjoyable.
Birthday messages on facebook overwhelm me and on the flip side I'm worried I wont get many (I'll probably get like 20 or so though which I'd be happy with). It stresses me quite a bit. Would it be weird to deactivate my facebook on my birthday to avoid worrying about petty things like above? On the flip side the messages would be nice but also stressful. I duno what to do

You could literally turn your settings for birthday to private so it won't ever show up on FB.

Do you want someone to tell you whether you should receive messages on your birthday or not?
You're not the center of attention of Facebook. After a "friend" writes a comment, they've almost completely forgotten about it. Five minutes later they've totally forgotten about it.
It's not at all a big deal. Don't put so much import into how much Facebook engagement you get.

This. I haven't received a happy birthday in years. People don't really care about you. Without facebook to tell them, they won't even know it's your birthday.

This sounds riciulously shallow but I'm worried if I have my fb on to get bday messages I wont get as many as I hoped for so I'd be upset
Just do what I did and change your settings so that no one can post on your wall. Also change your birthdate and set it to private.
Why? Why not? Who cares. I only have 30-40 friends on Facebook because I choose to and the same goes for who can see what.
