Ask a doctor anything
>>
How long have you been a doctor?
>>
I recently found a couple yellow spots on a few places on my body, there is no other discoloration anywhere else on my body. They're not bruises because they don't hurt but I'm kind of freaking out. What are they?
>>
>>17662777
3 years

>>17662783
Need to see them to have a vague clue.
>>
>>17662774
Why is medical education so stupid?
Why does it only teach you about disease and nothing about health?
Do you own your own practice, and if not, why are you a slave to Big Pharma?
Did you know that Big Pharma wrote your text books?
Have you read the Greeks?
>>
>>17662788
I was taught plenty about health.

I don't own my own practice because I work in hospital and I have no interest in primary care.

Jokes on you, I used wikipedia to get through medschool.

No.
>>
>>17662787

What age were you when you finished? If this is getting personal for you, just tell me.
>>
>>17662791
Graduated when I was 23.
>>

Do you ever feel like you have neglected patients?

This isn't my own picture but it's exactly like what I have
>>
>>17662796
Not neglected as such. But I have felt many times that I haven't been able to do as good as a job as I could have purely because of time constraints and other priorities.

There have been many shifts, particularly when looking after multiple wards out of hours, where I've purely had to instigate the bare basics to ensure safety of patients, rather than the best outcome.
>>
>>17662789
You are the problem. You don't know anything about health. Wikipedia is corporate information.
>>
>>17662789
work in a hospital? Are you ever gonna be rich or nah because every doc I know in the hospital is like a middle brow pleb but every private practice doc I know is a straight millionaire
>>
>>17662811
Lmao, ok. Don't let your tinfoil hat fall off, m8.

>>17662800
Just looks like a bruise in all honesty.
>>
>>17662815
I work for the NHS, so I'll never be "rich" but I will always be an above-average earner. Also working in a hospital doesn't preclude you to doing private work.
>>
>>17662819

This might sound a weird question/request, but If I ask you to think of the word "patient", what do you see? A specific person? A default image? Anything?
>>
>>17662824
Generic image of someone in a cubicle or bay on a hospital bed wearing a gown.
>>
>>17662817
I really don't think so, I wasn't hit in the places they're appearing and I have about 3-4 in different parts of my body and they all randomly appeared one day. They don't feel like bruises either
>>
>>17662774
What's your specialization? Or what's your desired specialization?

Are you a MBBS or MD?

MBBS. Currently in anaesthetic training with a view to be an intensivist.

We don't really use terms like 'resident' in the UK. It's three years post graduating which essentially makes me a senior house officer/CT2.

I recently noticed a weird mass/tumor, should I see my GP for this?

It's located about 2cm to the left and 2cm below my the base of my dick.
It's tiny and just below the skin. If I grab it with my fingers I can grab about 0.75cm of skin, so the thing is probably less than half a centimeter in diameter.
It's hard, not painful whatsoever, the skin looks normal, there is no visible skin bump.

I noticed it about a month ago but considering how tiny it is and in a spot I rarely examine closely it could be much older.

What do? A GP would just look at it and then do nothing, right?

Otherwise completely health, no medication, 23 year old male

Why have I been having stomach problems?

Some background on my issue:
Woke up with a heavy feeling in my lower stomach, nausea and fatigue; if it means anything I think this happened after my period. I was vomiting in June, and it felt like a muscle was twitching, like a moving feeling. My stomach has been bloated also.

My lower back got injured badly from weight lifting. I had terrible tightness in my lower backwhich effectively crippled me I was under so much pain
I was in pain for 8 months

Then I found Dr Stuart McGill's lower back stabilisation protocol and I'm pain free and lifting fine after a month of doing it once a day

My lower back gets "sore", not tight after dead lifting, I assume this is because its weak. Lasts few hours.

Also get some pain when laying on my back and lifting my leg in the air in a weird way.

Otherwise I'm pain free and fine
I didn't see a doctor ever tho

I know you probably can't help much but I'm considering a career as a rad tech/x-ray tech.

Is this a decent job? High satisfaction rate?

How do docs generally view their x-ray staff?
>>
>>17664425

I work in Cat Scan. It's a chill job depending on where you work. I work in a high velocity trauma center and it's essentially patient after patient. Pay is decent. Schooling is about two years. People tend to stay within the job for years. Docs view xrays after radiologist view them and send them off.
>>
Ok, so almost every time I eat something I get this urge to puke, and it's always the same whitish mucus (most of the time no food comes out, only mucus). Also I'm coughing all the time and everyday for the last 5 years, but all my x rays and exams tell me I'm ok. You got any idea of what this might be?

I currently have an issue where if I sit down for 3-4 hours my hip/femur connection goes weird...

I'll get up and walk around, and it feels like it's out of place; really bad pain, can't walk properly etc. Have to click it back into position.

Any ideas? Worth going to physio to check it out?
>>
>>17664585
A medical degree.

>>17664602
Google it anon, though odds are if you're asking instead of just looking it up, you're looking for someone to talk you down, and you'd be best served by checking into a psych ward for a bit if you feel like you're actually going to do it.

Anyone who's suicidal should, go in, try it out for a month or so, and if there's no improvement, bullshit your way out and do it then. Though by "suicidal" I mean you actively have plans and a date to do it, not just suicidal thoughts. The wards are far too full for everyone who feels like they might possibly commit suicide in the future, people need those beds.

>>17664649
How longs it been going on for? Generally if you have a weird pain that lasts longer than a week or two, you should see your doctor, or a physio.

Not OP.
Probably a lymph node- part of a weird tube network that's used by your immune system for transport/storage. Nodes in particular are used to store pathogens for later use, and can become enlarged/inflamed for a long time after an infection. Or cancer of course.
Just monitor it for changes in size/shape (cancer would get bigger/irregular, *quickly*) & don't worry.
I've had one (same-size) in my armpit for almost a decade now.

Dating a doctor is as good as dating no one. They literally work to the night. Sometimes they don't even come home. Better chance dating some successful entrepreneur, they earn a lot of money and they have a ton of free time.
>>
>>17665594

>>17662774
Have you ever been sexually attracted to one of your patients. Has any of your patients flirted with you excessively to the point where it's obvious they want to get dicked?

Weirdest experience working as a doctor? Whether it was a night shift, weird patient, anything weird?
>>
>>17665603

I have blood in my stool for some time now. What could it be and should I go to see a doctor?
>>
>>17665644

Definitely go se aa doctor asap, especially if the blood is dark in color. You could have internal bleeding somewhere and that is always serious.
>>
>>17665649
It is bright red blood not dark. Also don't know if it's important but my father had tumour 4 years ago.
>>
>>17665680
No, it's not serious if that's the case, it likely just means you have some minor tearing near your anus, which could be caused by you not getting enough fiber.

Do you have issues actually going to the toilet? Constipation, pain, anything like that?

It's not internal bleeding by the way, if it's bright red it's fresh, so near the entrance, and assuming you're not pouring blood out your ass, it's a really minor thing that should just go away with time. Make sure you eat enough fiber and drink enough water and it should pass.
>>
What can I do to make my hair healthier?
I'm a girl with really long hair and even if I got it cut, the top part would still be dry and frizzy.

When I wash and blow dry it, it just looks awful
>>
>>17665714
Don't blow dry it, that can be really bad for your hair. And use a shampoo that's more suited to your hair type.

Seriously though, it's a doctor, not a hairdresser.
>>
>>17665716
in the UK we have GPs that kinda deal with everything so I assumed OP was the same.

I use repair shampoos and conditioners but i'll try not blow drying, thanks
>>
I sometimes have pain on top of my head, a bit to the right, wouldnt call it a headache because it just feels like for a few secs something is gripping tight or pushing a finger hard trough my brain in that spot.
What Could it be? I know for sure im not confusing it with a migraine or tension headache, have no other symptoms atm
>>
>>17665722
Ah, it's the same here in Aus, but I still wouldn't ask my GP for advice with making my hair look better.

But yeah, blow drying can make your hair look really dry and frizzy, so it could be that. Hope it helps.

>>17665724
Probably just muscular twinges, I think most people get them somewhere, especially if it's just for a few seconds.

Unless it's super intense or you have any other symptoms, I wouldn't stress.

Oh, and to clarify, not a doctor, I'm a nurse, spend most of my time in a psych ward, but you have to learn the basics before you get there, so you learn what signs are serious and worrying and what aren't.
>>
I had an ultrasound and my doc said I have white spots on my bladder. He recommended me to a urologist but I'm extremely scared it's cancer. So I didn't go.

The only thing I noticed that is different is that I have to urinate with urgency. Before I could hold it longer.

Give it to me straught.
>>
>>17665736
If it was cancer, he would have sent you to an oncologist from my understanding, and he'd have been obligated to tell you if it was a serious concern, so you knew it could be life threatening.

Go see the urologist, none of us can diagnose you from a "White dots on an ultrasound", it could be anything from stones to some sort of parasite (it's not), I have no idea, and evidently the urologist will.

Do you think it'll just go away if you don't go to the appointment?
>>
>>17665742
If it was cancer I'd rather my parents not know because they'd go into an abyss of debt trying to save me. I don't want to die knowing I was a burden. Also. I lost the number he gave me to the urologist and I doubt any other office takes my insurance.

Thank you for answering.
>>
>>17665751
Well, as I said, it's nearly definitely not cancer, because that's not what urologists specialise in. You probably just had stones or something minor that could develop if left untreated.

Call your GP and ask for another referral.
>>
>>17664117

Cut down on how many showers you take, or cut down on how frequently you use shampoo.
You don't need to shampoo your hair every day.
>>
>>17666065
Not a good idea dude. If it's on your hand you could spread it to your dick. If it's on your dick, you could make it worse.
Just chill while it's there and take all your antibiotics, even after it gets better. All of them. Finish the prescription.

>>
>>17666467
It could be hormones (you'll have to take meds), electrolytes (meds &/or diet changes), or a physical change in your gut/brain like cancer. (cancer can be responsible for just about anything)
Go talk to someone & get some diagnostics- the fact that the symptoms are sticking around makes it serious.
>>
>>17666498
Do you think it could be an ulcer? My mother and I have acid reflux and she's had two ulcers
>>
>>17666488
I'm not op, but maybe you need less fiber in your diet
>>
>>17666488
Are they all liquid stools? Is there a lot or not very much?
Constant diarrhea can lead to other, more serious problems.

Try scarfing down some pro-biotics & change your diet. Less fiber, more constipation-inducing stuff like dairy, bread, meat, cut down on the veggies/seeds/nuts.
Have you been binge-ing on any one particular food?

Unless you are indeed binge-ing on something that happens to be high in potassium, start consuming more potassium (bananas, sweet potatoes, yoghurt) & increase your water intake. You're losing a lot of potassium & water in your stools, so you've gotta replace them.
>>
>>17666519
Could be, but usually that comes with pains that don't match your description, (sounds like you were having cramps).
If you go in they'll be able to tell you.
>>
>>17666539
I hope next time I go in, I can ask and the doc could help
It felt like the opposite of a cramp, as if my lower stomach was trying to stretch.
>>
>>17666529
Yes mostly liquid to semi solid. Moderate amounts. No matter how I've changed my diet it persist. I have already seen DR's about it and I have done the things you recommended. I just want some degree of normalcy in my life.
>>
>>17666559
Maybe you've got Crohn's? What did your DRs say/do?

I am in undergrad and going to Kenya this upcoming summer to do a medical internship, independently of any group or organization. I will be in one of the more underserved areas and expect to be asked to help with procedures above my skill level due to the severe understaffing. I purchased several types of sutures and silicone to practice on, but what else do you recommend doing to prepare? What common low-tech procedures should I read about in order to be of the greatest help? On my list currently are:

Childbirth
External sutures
IV placement
Basic percussion and auscultation
Emergency intubation and tracheostomies
Central line placement
General surgery assistance and instrument identification

surely you can ascertain from the context of my post - that i will be in Kenya - that 'low tech' doesn't mean unscientific, but rather refers to the limited resources in sub-saharan africa, and the absence of equipment like shiny new OR's, MRI machines, and clean water.

>>
>>17666650
What this guy said, since you've already tried dairy/grains and they didn't help.
Try experimenting & see if you can identify foods which make it worse.

Barium swallows aren't very good for mild/moderate Crohn's, so unless you've had one of those newfangled Video Capsule Endoscopies, I wouldn't discount it.
It sounds too severe/persistent to be IBS.

is it worth it?
Im on my first year of medschool, I want to do research
on brains and shit

im smarter than the average but im no genius and I have adhd
is it worth spending 10+ years studying to become a medical researcher?

neurology is a pretty virgin field I feel, im hoping to name something after me
then I can die happy
>>
>>17666787
Not OP, but if you're only 'smarter than average, with adhd', you might have a hard time succeeding.

You should consider aiming a bit lower than MD/neuroscience, and then move up if you find you have the aptitude. Like, a lot lower. Associate's degree kind of lower.

I wish I had, instead of aiming high & adjusting down. It would have saved me a lot of time & heartache.
>>
>>17666916
Im great at conforming
Im planning on adjusting down from the highest point, so I am the best I can possibly be

id rather be dissapointed than torture myself thinkin of what if
>>
>>17666981
Trust me, failing down is more torturous than succeeding up.
Either way you could waste a couple years, but the latter gives you confidence & a solid base to fall back on, while the former crushes your confidence & leaves you with nothing until you finally settle.

Don't adjust down, build up.
>>
>>17666404

Elaborate. Why would it be on my hand? Do you mean if I get semen infected with the bacteria on my hand I could spread it?
>>
>>17667011
but I want to settle for the highest I can be
ive never truly tried in my life so I dont know what Im capable of

if I make it my life to succed then I think I can get close to what I expected from the beggining

idk, if I end up being an average loser I will be happy as long as I make enough money to buy pot and munchies

plus what do you mean by build up?

lets say I finish med school and Im a med
what speciality should I choose? neurology? thats what I want to do
then what sub-speciality should I choose?

where should I give up and settle in that order?

Can allergy to mites aggravate during certain seasons/periods? Is there anything I can do to treat it or make it better (I mean the allergy itself, I know I can make my bed and my house as a whole mites-free) without that expensive 5 years long treatment clinics offer?
Can prolonged exposure to the allergen worsen it definitively? What are the chances of developing asthma from it?
>>
>>17667062
The only reason masturbation would be off-limits is if the epidermatitis was on your dick or your hand.
In either case, whatever was causing it could spread on contact.
>>
>>17667077
Anon it sounds like you have no idea what it takes to become a doctor and are in all likelihood ill-suited to the kind of hard work & focus it takes to get there.
Start small with an associates in something medical-related.
Like a lab-tech or med-tech. Maybe an LPN. If you succeed there, you can go on to more difficult/demanding study, complete your bachelors, and then decide whether med-school is something you could feasibly complete & decide from there.
In the meantime you will have achieved your baseline goal of 'making enough money to buy pot & munchies' and will just be building up from that point on.
Don't bite off more than you can chew- you'll wind up 3 years into a 4-year program, realize you don't have what it takes, and have to start over from the beginning WITH NOTHING.
Don't do it unless you're intimately familiar with the process & are certain you're capable of it.
The endeavor's expensive in time, effort, money, and general well-being.

> & are certain you're capable of it.

> time, effort, money, and general well-being.

there are doctors with significantly below average IQ that do fine. it's memorization, information retention, and application. you don't need to be smart to do that. go for it.
>>
>>17667241
yeah, I want to do research and be on the forefront of something, although I dont know how plausible that is. If that cant happen then I will settle for being a good doctor
>>
How about what to do when I can't eat much of anything even though I try to, doesn't seem to be on the internet.
>>

Would u rather work in an all male staffed hospital or an all female staffed hospital and why arent nursing homes segregated by gender anymore?
>>

Not OP but learn how to get a bone line access. You will need it for the little dehydrated children with no easy venous line.

Also, learn how to take some knife wounds because when they throw some overweight woman with diabetes and a 12 lbs baby on your hands and it dies on childbirth they will kill you because you will get blamed.

Protip: do not go

when I went to the toilet do take a poop there was a lot of fresh blood with it and by a lot I mean like really a lot.. it made the water all red. After that I'm scared to go to the toilet. will I die?
>>
>>17667112

You misunderstand me. I have epididymitis, an infection in the lining of the epididymis, not an external infection. Will masturbation prevent it from healing, or is it okay?
>>

Go to a doctor immediately. Blood can be one of the first signs of a serious condition like a tear in your intestine.
>>
>>17667428
Bright blood means injury in the lower tract, either the large intestine or near the end of the small. Usually that's better than dark, coffee-ground blood, which indicated injury higher up in the tract.
A large quantity is a bad thing, but it can be difficult to tell exactly how much there was when you're dropping it into water. A little can go a long way in the toilet bowl.
Schedule an appointment for *soon*, & keep an eye on it. Don't hold it in- better to have more soft poops than one massive TEAR EVERYTHING poop.

If there continues to be a lot/even more, step it up & get in to see someone.
If you start to feel light-headed, lose color in your face/fingers, develop an exceptionally fast heart rate or start having acute abdominal pains, go to the emergency room.

HOW DO I MAKE MY COCK BIGGER
>>
How do I deal with fear of death? I'm constantly worried about something happening to me, or going to sleep and not waking up
>>
>>17662774
why can't this shitty doctor just write the prescriptions clearly for one

i have to call the nurses to double-check the orders every time he does his rounds

like what the fuck, it's absolutely garbage handwriting that makes shit ambigious. Why do that with critical medications? It's almost like they want the people in these nursing homes to die faster
>>

Lose weight.

Dude, you're being a little bitch.
They're bruises, they can come from exercise or sleeping wrong if you could believe it or not. Quit being a Faggot

Whats the normal level of testosterone for a 18-20 guy? Please respond in ng/dL units?
>>
>>17667880
Between around 280-1100ng/dL for a healthy adult male.

And the reason it's so wide is because as long as you're in that range, you won't notice much difference, testosterone only has a big impact on you at levels either way above that (so with steroids) or way below it. It's why no-one juices up to 800ng/dL, because like most hormones, that normal range is when you're not going to notice any real difference.

Please don't listen to /fit/ for advice on this shit, they're a bunch of teenage retards (seriously, average age there is 17 according to polls) who all like to pretend that they know everything, while most don't even know what's in the sticky, or what muscles a squat works past "quads and core".

If your doctor says it's normal and nothing to worry about, it is, he didn't do 8+ years of study for nothing.

Can you please euthanize me? I just want to die.
>>
I have two pounds of caffeine powder.

What will a suicide with this feel like?
>>
>>17668671
Same as any stimulant overdose.
>dizziness
>headache
>Fever
>irritability
>intense thirst
>trouble breathing
>vomiting
>hallucinations
>confusion
>chest pain
>irregular and racing pulse
>uncontrollable muscle movement
>spasms
>convulsions

And then you'd die of cardiac arrest.

So not pleasant.

What is my plaque/calculus and poor gum health doing to my heart and the rest of my body?

I'm Type 1 diabetic and taking steroids, what should I be worried about?
