Girls like this are honestly more trouble than they're worth. Just cut your losses and forget her. I'm not saying it'll be easy, it's gonna be hard as fuck and you're probably gonna be hurt for a while, but if you're still in school that means you have more than enough time in your life to meet someone else.

I feel I have some similar tendicicies to the girl. A mixture of insecurity, scared of rejection, or fear of being hurt and embarrased by someone. I could see myself pushing people away but deep down wouldn't want that truly.
I think OP should continue perusing the friendship just to see if she can truly open up and wants to be with you but is scared etc. It could be that after the initial fears/ hesitation she flourishes.
But at the end of the day you know her and can judge her better than anyone here.

This is hard, but you have to let her go. Don't abandon her, but tell her in no uncertain terms that you understand how she feels, and you'll be here for her if she needs you. That's literally all you can do. Then, reflect on the fact that you actually had a meaningful relationship with someone, and this is a fantastic thing. Let it embolden you, and recognize that you legitimately dated a "hot girl," and that you have no reason to doubt yourself. Don't think you're above anyone, but fully embrace the fact that you are actually as good as everyone else, because it's true. You're awesome, OP.
