I brought this up with my girlfriend, who stated that college is about the “experience,” and even if they don’t do anything with their major or make a career out of it, then they are “perusing knowledge and elevating themselves.” After I asked her how she felt about people who get gender studies or arts degrees and then work at Subway, and then got very upset with me. After the conversation ensued and I told her that those who take institutional and personal scholarships and grants are being disingenuous by not doing anything with their college degrees, she essentially stated that she’s currently in college because she wants to “learn things,” and hinted that she could actually care less about getting a job. I told her that I would feel very frustrated if she left her parents and I for four years, encouraged myeto go to college with her and influenced her parents to move to her college just so she can learn things and not actually do them. Essentially, neither of us could budge on the subject.

She currently doesn’t have to pay for college because she has scholarships, has free housing, and is on work/study. She says that college’s function, or her interpretation of it, is that it is used to delay having to work, as working is something that you don’t want to do. I feel as though if she left her family and I behind just so she doesn’t have to go to work yet, then I would feel betrayed. It makes me feel bad that I’m dating someone who takes up government and personal money with even an iota of thought of using it just so she can freeboot and do nothing with herself. As she’s confided in me, she wants to have children and be a stay at home mom, and I believe that this is why she doesn’t genuinely care at all. She has the option to quit if she wants to at any time, and she knows that she can always have someone to pay the bills.

It’s like she’s living in some socialist fairy tale where the reason money is invested in students is so that they can just fuck off for four years and not work, and then do something that they would be able to do with a GED.

I feel like a bad guy because I’m taking a practical and frugal approach to college while everyone else is seemingly making mistake. I’m confused, /adv/, could you give me some opinions?

CS is the fastest growing field currently, and is in high demand. To imply that any of these are worth more than that is ridiculous:

A music degree to someone who can't play.
A music degree to a NEET..
A general education degree.
A gender studies degree.
A Linguist degree for someone with bad grammar who can't spell or stucture sentences.
An acting degree for someone who is sub-par.

I don't think that I'm wrong, but that's why I'm asking the board to either vindicate me or educate me on why I'm wrong.

Considering how kids in my highschool took it so seriously yet screwed the pooch when it comes to college, it's not as though there isn't an argument. Everyone acts so serious about their education and then many choose to not do anything worth while.
