I think by avoiding it, and not having a relationship for 8 years like I did, because you got so badly fucked over by someone who claimed to love you. I don't think you get over it unless you fall in love with a different person, because rebound relations don't bring content, as far as I'm concerned

You balance out the pain, as in think about how much worse the pain will be not knowing if he/she will say yes or no. Motivates you to actually do it.

What happens if you get rejected? It's the exact same fucking thing as if you did nothing; life isn't like TV/film where people will openly mock you for trying and failing, within reason obviously.
