Is heartbreak a product of the ego?
In a way.
They're so important to you, so why aren't you important to them? Your ego may prevent you from reconciling these two facts.
I'm assuming you mean heartbreak over another person in a romantic/attraction sense, which is the reason I'm on /adv/ right now :/
On the topic of ego: is it possible to have self-esteem and confidence while consciously suppressing ego defense mechanisms as much as you can? My understanding on this kind of stuff is really limited, but it seems analogous to a boxer trying to win fights without blocking or dodging. It's like the only solution in that scenario is to make it so the punches don't even phase you

confidence is simply the belief that your skills back up your claims.
you can believe that you are an attractive guy and a great catch, but ego means believing that you are the only guy and the best catch, and anyone who refuses you is just too blind to understand how great you are.
Self-esteem and confidence is believing that you can make a great movie and people will enjoy it. Ego means that it was the greatest movie of all time and people are just too dumb to understand your art.
you can have 100% confidence withotu any ego. truthfully we all tend to bounce around in the middle, but i just mean to say that you can be confident without being egotistical.

are there any books you recommend I read so I can know what you know?

everything i learned i learned from a psychic or from conversation with others.
books only tell you what you set out to hear. conversation you hear whatever people feel like sharing.
helps you reach new conclusions better.
