I want to quit this website. Really I do. I've outgrown this website.

I've been here on and off since I was about 14, and probably a regular poster since I was about 17. I'm 22 now and this place is honestly ruining my mental health.

A lot of you may disagree with me, but I find this place honestly just way too childish, hostile, and honestly weird. I don't know how I didn't leave this website years ago. It doesn't matter what board you go to, it's all got it's own level of shit. People will argue there are good and bad boards. I disagree.

People just come here to fight, to argue, to shit post, to make inane banal threads purely to annoy others. Realising this is actually some peoples lives, and how they get their enjoyment is baffling, me being someone who used to spend day after day on here for 12+ hours.

Anyway, I've waffled on way too much.

tl;dr

Has anyone quit 4chan successfully? I guess that's a stupid question, because they wouldn't be here anymore.
>inb4 tweak this website to your liking
>>
I should've mentioned, this website is highly addictive. Maybe not for everyone, but it certainly is for me.

The hostility, argumentative, cynical nature of this website is doing my mental health no good either.

Sure that might be laugh worthy, even pathetic, but I'm just being honest, this website is fucking me up, yet I continue to come here.
>>
>>17566616
if you have nothing better to do than browsing this shithole for 12 hours; I'd say their are bigger in your live that need to be fixed and this site isn't the sole source of your misfortunes.
>>
I haven't quit 4chan, but I have stopped using some boards (relatively non-toxic though) and quit other websites where I felt like it wasn't good for my mental health.

>inb4 tweak this website to your liking
Honestly, this has a lot to do with why I'm still here. Hiding threads and posts that you just don't want to see can do wonders, I don't know how I kept sane before I started using them.

Btw, for what it's worth, I'd consider myself a 'normie' even though I've been here for about 6 years. I just haven't let it affect me much.
>>
>>17566616
Remember: You're here forever.

4chan is propably the reason I ended up such a loser in life.
But fuck me, I can never leave this place. I'll propably off myself if this place ever disappears.
>>
>>17566616
dont forget, youre here forever
there is no escape, anon. may as well get comfy.

>Remember: You're here forever.
I hate this attitude though. I don't believe that to be true at all. I can't stand this place yet I find it so fucking addictive, and I loathe myself for coming here day in day out.
>>
>>17566621
I'd say 4chan has exacerbated my mental health issues, but I disagree that it's not the website. This website definitely changes people. I mean when you look at boards like /pol/ and /r9k/ they are definitely "hive minds" if you want to call them that. They brainwash each other constantly into certain ideals and beliefs.
>inb4 I use those boards
>>
>>17566623
I'd still consider myself "normal". Although I definitely keep up a facade in front of people.

I'm not at all an obese neckbeard or anything though. I regularly exercise and socialise, this website is just becoming a burden on my health, and it pains me, yet I'm a slave to it. Pathetic I know.

OP may relate to this video:

I've seen it about three times before. It's a good video, sadly, when addiction arises, nothing changes. I will watch it again though.

Well he's dropping a lot of truth bombs there.

If addiction is your biggest problem, the only way I see it is to excercise self-discipline and either gradually reduce your use or to go cold-turkey. There's no way around it, as much as I hate to say it.

t. Dude trying to get over his porn addiction.
>>
>>17566696
I have an addictive personality in general. It's been a burden on my life for as long as I can remember. I used to smoke cigarettes, had a drinking problem at one point, also addicted to porn/internet in general. 4chan is just making it worse. It's like everything I hate about myself combined in the one website.
>>
>>17566616
Im in the same boat as you op. 7 years and counting. Getting friends and hobbies make me frequent this place less and less because I have now something more important and fun to do
>>
Im 28 and started lurking at 18ish..

you quit for a bit but will always end up coming back. thats the way it works baby
>>
>>17566712
I've been socialising a lot lately and it's definitely been making me use this website a lot less. Sadly my down time is still wasted here.
>>
>>17566716
That's far from the attitude I want to have though. I don't believe that to be true.

That's pretty much the same as a drug addict saying they'll never quit ever. Anyone can quit.
>>
>>17566711
I understand that addiction may then be an especially difficult thing for you to process.

In my opinion it only makes it all the more crucial that you tackle that issue.

In other words:

Get a grip, man.
>>
I'm the same age and despite falling into the "hive mind" traps briefly, I now recognise when something posted here is complete bullshit, and it sounds like you do too. A large reason why so much of this site is worthless is because most users are young (18 and possibly under), and since teens always think they have shit figured out, you're inevitably going to read some shit from the totally brainwashed. You sound self-aware enough to maintain your individuality so I just wouldn't overthink things, start taking small steps to filling your time with other interests (only you can find what this is so no suggestions). Trying to go cold turkey at once will likely end poorly. There's nothing inherently unhealthy about browsing this site but you just need balance, at least for now. Once you find something else to pursue, you'll slowly drift away from here (not necessarily altogether but enough that you don't feel like you're wasting your life browsing) and one day be hit with "oh shit, I barely go there any more".

Good luck with moving on, anon.

Apologies if the structure of this post seems off, I typed it one-handed while jacking off to sex audios.
>>
To be honest I just come here for the porn and occasionally look at the other threads, argue with some autist on /tv/ about the predator films maybe and then get on with my life. I honestly hate Internet forums with a passion but at least people on 4chan know the place is a shithole.

Tripfags can fuck right off though, especially on this board
>>
>>17566616
just post some CP here you'd get permabanned no question asked.
>>
We can try to get this website taken down. Would everyone using adblock on the site be enough to make it lose money?
>>
>tfw been here since I was 11 and I'm 18 now

I've known to be here 15 hours a day at times. I have low self-esteem, no friends, strange fetishes and paranoia. I don't know if it's because I spent my formative years here
>>
We need to take the site offline which should be easy to do except make it last longer and every day. We need botnets
>>
I'm the same way - I've been hanging around here since age 12-13 and I'm now 22.
The main 4chan userbase is about 16-19 and I feel like I've outgrown this place, and only drop in occasionally.
Some boards ARE better than others. I visit /an/ and /tg/ a lot, and they're a lot friendlier and have more good content than most other boards.
Reddit definitely has its issues, but it can be a decent platform for discussing certain things. I first started going there this year and though I hate the upvote/downvote system, I think it suits an older userbase better.

Thanks anon, this really hits home for me.

I really would like to know the demographic of this website. I hate to sound like "that guy" but I feel like the quality of this site has definitely gone down hill. The popularity of 4chan is ever growing, and you know what they say about quantity over quality.

I've been using Reddit personally on and off for the past two years. I definitely dislike the voting system like you, but it does hold merit sometimes. I still use it from time to time, but I only lurk.

I think I need to take some time away from the computer in general. It's just fucking me up.

>>17566844
Get out while you can. I've had the paranoia.
>>
Not including the 2 other boards I go to, I stopped coming to /adv/ because of how toxic the board is. Also I'm avoiding someone who regularly posts here. A friend turned enemy.

Anyway what keeps me off here in general is I have a job to be at. I can't just be on 4chan all day. There's shit that needs to get done and it won't get done by itself
>>
>>17566616
Here is an idea.
Go exclusively to boards you want to learn somethin from and stick to them until you stop learning almost anything and you'll naturally visit this place less and less.
>>
Everyone eventually goes "wow, this place is a genuine shithole if insecurity and underage bullshit" and leaves.

I browse every so often, but that's about it. You stop taking things to heart.
>>
>>17567243
Hmm, kind of hard for me when my main board is /mu/. Music to discover all the time really, whether old or new. It's easily one of the most toxic boards to exist though. I do need to find a new way to discover music.
>>17567239
A friend turned enemy? On /adv/?
>>17567254
The insecurity is something that gets me. And it makes me feel insecure, when everyone shits all over you for a certain thing.
>>
>>17566616
>I've been here on and off since I was about 14, and probably a regular poster since I was about 17. I'm 22 now and this place is honestly ruining my mental health.
>I'm 22 now and this place is honestly ruining my mental health.

It must feel pretty shit knowing a website has that much control over you.

If you go outside and see a couple arguing, does that cause you to have flashbacks or anything? you sound very weak.
>>
>>17567347
>control over me
It does feel pretty shit. Although it's not like I'm only ever doing this. I do have other interests outside of 4chan. You'd be surprised though, I'm sure I'm not the only one addicted to 4chan, or a website in general.
>>
>>17566616
I just dropped in this board out of curiosity. I haven't been here for months and have no intention of ever returning for more than a cursory glance. There are just many more intelligent alternatives that are more worth anyone's time.

I don't know where my disdain towards 4chan came from; I think it was just a gradual attitude change. I guess I also realized that this "meme culture" shit is awful and wanted nothing to do with it.

My mental health has improved remarkably since I've stopped browsing this site, and I think there's at least a moderate correlation between the two.

You'll eventually get bored of it all sooner or later, but if you really want to wean yourself off as fast as you can, go looking around for alternate communities and forums. The good ones aren't necessarily the most popular ones!
>>
>>17567384
>meme culture
I'm surprised I forgot to mention that in my original post. I can't stand the culture of it, although it seems to have infested the internet as a whole. If you've got any website suggestions I'd be happy to check them out.
>>
>>17566652
This is kind of typical of many internet communities though. I lurk various other Chan's and socially media sites including Dumblr and its all the same herd mentality with different politics.
>>
>>17567422
Of course. I never said otherwise. It just happens that 4chan is one of the more hostile communities what with the anonymity, lack of filters, rules etc.
>>
>>17567388
All memes are awful and it really says a lot about a person when they almost exclusively post them. It's almost as if they're too insecure to rely on their own senses of humor (if it exists) and feel the need to use pre-approved template humor as a crutch. I usually avoid them.

>>17567422
Boy oh boy, do I hate this recent trend of super-charged internet sociopolitics. Both ends of the spectrum (alt-right neo-nazi and rabid SJW feminazi) and their hivemind communitirs are probably the worst things to happen to the internet, second to the proliferation of memes. It makes many sites very hard to browse.
>>
>>17567453
*with the proliferation of memes being a close second. Having shitty morals is a lot worse than having shitty jokes.
>>
>>17567453
Not to mention the typical catch phrases that 4chan love to use. See: Cuck, or the word meme itself. Don't like something? Call it a meme. Want to shit post? Call it a meme. Everything on the internet is apparently a meme these days. Just living is a meme.
>>
>>17567463
Yeah, it sucks. I think the worst part about it all is that there's just no room for a traditional forum detached from mainstream internet culture to flourish anymore. The best you can really do is settle with a subreddit, which doesn't meet that criteria anyway. It's either that or settle for an obscure forum or irc channel with 5 semi-active members.

I sometimes wish I could re-visit the internet of 10 years ago, just to get away from all of the shit that happens today, but then I remember that lolcats were a thing and my desire instantly vanishes.
