My father is an alcoholic. He has been an alcoholic for at least 20 years. Recently I have noticed that he is deteriorating mentally and physically. Despite his alcoholism, my father has always been a strong and fairly intelligent man (despite his becoming an alcoholic). He drinks about 10 lagers every day.
Is there any way I can help him? Does anyone know people who have become clean after so long?

Didn't mean to repeat myself, just trying to defend against

Confront him and express your feelings about his alcoholism

I have, he admits to being an alcoholic. Orignally I thought I'd reached him, but that was 5 years ago and he always responds with comments such as 'my life is too hard not to be an alcoholic' or 'it is my only escape' etc.
Have you tried AA?
He has to want to help himself before it starts to really sink in.
I am in a DUI class right now and considering AA because I'm afraid of becoming an alcoholic.
Just ask him if he wants to stop.
>Using a Klaus Kinski photo for your thread about your father.
Quite the image you're putting out there.
I have a son and daughter and I drink about a half gallon or 1.75 litres of alcohol daily even while at work.
I know he may annoy you, and I dunno if this is good advice for you, but just love him while you have him. This shit feels impossible to stop. Our brains just feel bad all around. Please try to understand if you can. If you can't I cant blame you. My parents wont even talk to me anymore.

You're a true drunk my friend. Hope you hit bottom before it's to late.
