To the anons who served in a branch of your country's military, what has it done for you, and was it worth it?

Other than work 9to5 jobs or community college, I don't know what else to do with my life. I don't want to accumulate student loan debt, so uni is not going to happen.

It sounds like a good place for a steady income, healthcare, and to learn life skills. But I don't know. If I joined, I would be the first and almost guaranteed to be the only one of my parents kids to join.

Tl;DR Is it worth it to join the military?

They got that sweet Post 9/11 GI Bill now.

If you go Navy, insist they put your rating school in your enlistment contract. You don't want to be "Undesignated" and scraping paint off the side of the hull for 4 years.

YN is pretty cushy if you can stand office work.
>>
It is definitely worth it. Pick a job that can transfer to a civilian one and don't join the Marines unless you're a masochist.

They pay for you to go to school while you serve and the g.I. bill not only pays for all of your school but your housing too.
>>
figure out what you want to be when you grow up BEFORE you join your nation's fighting force. no one wants to babysit your punk ass. check or hold
>>
I'm joining the Coast Guard. I'll let you know when i'm done with MEPS and in the service.

If you have no skills and no clue what you'd want to do, the military can be a benefit to you. Just make sure you don't get stuck in motor pool or fucking maintenance like some other anon cautioned. That will happen if you don't have a clear idea of what you want to do.

Career USAF retired at 47 and never have to work again. Enjoyed the work, enjoyed the travel, even enjoyed the Sand Box since (unless you choose to be a bullet sponge or work Transportation and get stuck with the Army) a bad day at war is when you get the shits from the DFAC or the heat pump on your tent breaks.

Work on valuable things, in Caucasian AFSCs even if you are black or Hispanic or Martian. Medical has comfort and great career track. Aircraft maintenance is fun if you are a gearhead. (I was avionics, then engines and later crew chief.) Choose an airframe which will outlive you to avoid reductions in force, such as airlifters or UAS.

Do not be a cop, do not work Transportation, do not choose admin unless you are a welfare queen, and do not join ANY branch under general enlistment.

Would do again happily. I miss the Cold War but maybe they'll turn that back on again because defending Europe is fun. European NATO bases still exist so try to get stationed at ANY of them.

Think "career" from the start. Avoid losers even if they are friendly, but be a good team player.

The brotherhood is real.

So is dat retirement pay table plus edubennies and medical care. If I got pissed on every day it would have been worth staying, and really the main sucky time is when you make rank and have to babysit adults instead of work with technology. That's late in the game though and no problem.

Recession? What Recession? Houses are paid for and my overhead ain't shit.

Listen to every disgruntled veteran so you avoid their mistakes. Filter for "stupid". Make wise choices. It's easy.

Most of career is spent at peace. Choose accordingly. The Army has to have low standards to fill manning slots so their smartbros have to suffer under a system designed for the lowest common denominator. Army culture is often not professional and is often "ate up". Other service recruiters send their low ASVAB scorers to the Army. My recruiterbros confirmed it.

Got me out of Moody by crosstraining to Engines, but then Rivet Workforce turned motor troops into nosepickers. (So called at the time for watching everyone else fix their aircraft.) Did Comm/Nav on Phantoms and Broncos. Engines and crew dog on F-16s A through Block 50s.

Of course I mostly did engine work anyway because experienced though the rest was chill enough.

Worked F-16s so babby tires. Was 7 Level by then but not a cunt so changed my own instead of boning some young Airman.

Any Specialist can be a crew chief. Hit them in the head with a Ford wrench, crosstrain complete. (runs) Load Toads can be crosstrained into sand bags, snacko, and make great wingmen because they'll fuck anything with a hole and a heartbeat.

Making rank was easy as a nosepicker though and the best crew chiefs who do flight controls, hydraulics and motors are sharp as anyone in Spec Flt.

Did five years. Got out ten years ago. To this day I question if leaving the Army was the right choice for me. Dealing with civilians in the workplace is maddening. People are to fucking sensitive about their 'feelings' and think having the right to your own opinion means your opinions are just as valid as other's.

We had people from all the other services but Coast Guard switch to the AF. If not too ancient it's often possible for prior service to go Air Force. Guard and Reserve are especially good gigs if ya want to maintain civlian employment while getting retirement credit.

There are many ways to $erve.

You can pick fields with few civilians or where they don't ever run workcenters. Some of my IT bros work with civilians who are slugs, but others are cool.

Yeah good choice

You cant TDY as a spec from where I am at least unless you go on a shitty MRT

You were in during the glory days, thanks for making me have to do a shit ton of sexual harassment training every year :^)

Wow you literally raped me with this post I'm going to HR

I missed the boat to attend OCS, but I have my eye on a federal position right now.

I got in trouble for having a conversation with a temp about parsley when a pregnant woman was around. Turns out parsley in massive amounts can cause miscarriage. I never saw the temp after that day again.

my brothers went to the Marines and the Navy. they were both miserable while they were in (to the point where I thought they might kill themselves or someone else) but once they got out they just talk about how it was the greatest shit ever.

they both did it because they're deadbeats and were desperate to do anything with their lives.

one went in and came back an alcoholic. the other went in an alcoholic and came out an even worse alcoholic.

so I dunno what to say. it depends on the person I guess. it's not going to fix your life like my brothers thought it would, if anything it made them worse because the military takes care of you like a baby.

If you like helping others go Navy with one of the Seabee rates. You'll learn construction skills, welding, heavy equipment mechanic, or plumbing. I was a MR that got assigned to them, was pretty great.
>>
Although I haven't served, my parents both have and talk of how it was great.

Also, they met there, meaning I wouldn't of been born if it weren't for the Marines. So if any of you are beta losers, maybe this can change everything.
>>

Pretty much sums up my marine experience. Though I'd say it was more getting treated like a kid with down syndrome in the 70s.
