he is convinced I am part of a big conspiracy against him when I have just been sending him random stuff on facebook chat to see how is getting along because we used to be mates.
his family are very schizophrenic but I do not want to diagnose him, especially as a friend. I feel kind of scared atm and very very confused. This is all out of the blue for me.

Get away from him. If you try convincing him he's wrong, he would just think it's another part of some elaborate conspiracy against him. Maybe you could contact relatives or someone in a position who can help him...otherwise your friendship is fucked.
