I think I have some kind of fear of large bodies of water, and now my friends are taking me on a boating trip. I really want to go with them, but I'm extremely uncomfortable with the thought of being out in the middle of the ocean.
The last time I had a really bad experience with this was when I was younger, and my grandparents took us tubing out on a reservoir lake. It pretty much involved taking turns riding on the tube hooked to the back of a speedboat until you fell off. I was very nervous riding on the tube and when I inevitably fell off and was floating in the water while the boat circled around, I felt an overwhelming sense of dread and terror. I almost started screaming "get me out" as soon as the boat pulled up next to me.
I still get anxious thinking about situations like that. Ironically, I can't even play games like Subnautica due to the same anxiety. Point being, what could I do to get around this if I went with my friends on this trip? Does anyone have a similar fear?
I say go. Make them aware that your have this fear but day you'll try your best.
When you're there, take everything within your stride, but take your time, step by step, getting more involved with the water. Ignore any peer pressure and banter. In fact I'd say to them something along the lines of if they tease you about it then you won't even try to go in. Sounds sad but the last thing you need is ridicule.
I don't know a lot about fears and such, but I will say that the open water has the potential to be the most enjoyable active activity and bonding session you can have.
