Does anyone actually get what they want in life?

'Get', as in, understand? Or as in, to acquire? Either way, for me, it's no in both cases.

Yes, but it seldom falls into your lap. You need to make things happen, sometimes this involves MUH HARD WORK, sometimes it involves luck, a lot of the time it involves some combination of the two and a willingness to keep your eye out for tangential opportunities (like how I got my dream job through a customer I met waiting tables at a cafe).

Everything you've enjoyed, unless it was dirt and trees, was made by someone. Whether it was a happy childhood or a cool album of a fun game, people made it possible. You can make things possible too.
