>mid 20s
>loved video games since 8
>played countless hours through my teen years
>develop a porn addiction
>develop an internet addiction
>always felt ashamed
>relied on it as escapism
>reflect on my hobby
>realize I have a problem

This is less of a case of "I want to quit something which does me no harm and I like" but something which has actually hurt me long term in growth.

To give an example, during my younger years I would leave a party to play games, even if said party was mine. I also get extremely frustrated if I lack access to games or my computer.

That and I realize im not playing my fighting games cause I enjoy it but for the winners high. I feel ashamed cause quite honestly in my hearts of hearts I know I am flushing away time I could have spent better and that my time will amount to nill. But I am obsessed with it, I need to feel that rush.

I tried to limit myself to single player games which worked for a short time but I relapsed.

How do I put these aside and replace my obsession with a more productive one?

Please help.

Get (good) friends.

Be careful of advice here that comes from vidya addicts.
>>
>>17466273
I actually got two groups of friends I see once or twice a month each or two times depending since we are all working.

I know but this is more to help my lifestyle as a whole, i spend an inordinate amount of time on games as a whole.

My friends all play games too but they are in software engineering so thats expected. That and when we meet we never lan its all fun retro board games.

if it's really this serious you should see a therapist
>>
>>17466371
I would prefer to try working on it myself first and honestly im not in a financial position to do so.

I was/am still in the same boat as you OP, but over the last 2 years I've slowly, seemingly automatically, put aside videogames for greater endeavors that benefit me more. I didn't really force myself, I just find things I wanted to do more than play videogames. For example, I've gotten back into reading only because I started reading fantasy books I've read when I was younger, and because of that I'd rather do that more than gaming. I've also started watching documentaries and movies more often. I have two separate group of friends who I meet with every so often, one is more into videogames, anime, and magic the gathering, all except Magic I've cut out of my life (and even now I hardly but magic cards anymore). The other group has no similarities to that group whatsoever and is more involved with cooking, yoga, exercise, meditation, etc and that's helped tremendously.

It certainly helps having a good group of friends to sway you away from habits that impede you, but you could also build away from your habits through your own self discipline. Overall, I find that having higher priorities and having a drive to accomplish those priorities had helped me overcome a lot of lifelong troubles. And also give it time, you can't change those habits in a day/week/month/ or sometimes a year

Like any addiction it's self discipline that will get you through.

Remove all vidya from your house. Sell it, give it to a kids hospital, whatever.

You pretty much said everything yourself already.

>I realize I am not playing my fighting games cause I enjoy it but for the winners high
you are not addicted to video games, that's why...
>I tried to limit myself to single player games
...didn't work

You have to find a hobby that's fun doing and that also gives you that feeling that made you addicted.
The problem with those games is they give you the feeling of achieving something much easier than any productive/creative hobby.
I can't think of anything that gives you instant gratification like video games so in the end it comes down to patience, perseverance and self discipline like >>17466426 already said.
>>
>>17466502
Thats the issue really, the easy self gratification which has been put in my head for years. Reconditioning it is my worry or more ao how to.
>>
>>17466253
Honestly if you aren't an ass-burger or something, then you'll feel intense an shame knowing you're literally playing with children's toys.

Look up some Minecraft or Five-Nights-At-Freddy shit on youtube, tell me you don't cringe having the same hobby as those fucks.

Use that shame to become an adult.

i wish i could play video games i used to love them
now i just find them boring and would rather read books
holy fuck i am an old man
>>
>>17466618
I have and I never played either. They were both break outs though and I dont like them but i didnt cringe. Still, I will try my best to address this. Maybe this time I will succeed.

>>17466631
Funny thing is before i drowned in games, books were my first love. Goosebumps was great.
>>
>>17466381
you work on it yourself either way. a therapist is just there to guide you through the steps. this is something an imageboard of strangers can't do bc no one here knows your real circumstances.

how would you work on it yourself? just turn of the pc and do something else w your time
>>
You sound like my ex. Resented me because I knew he whittled away his life and social growth on games and cartoon porn and tried to show him so.

You have to want to do something different for real. You need to learn a skill and take up other hobbies that enrich your life. Or take up exercising.

I did jogging for a year and honestly my circumstances are stable if not comfy. My issue is it permeates a lot of my free time as stress relief, relaxation and entertainment. All of that is video games.

The jogging lasted due to doing my masters, i only brought my netbook so i wouldnt play games and exercise was something everyone did on the course as we had so little time. At home when i moved back after uni i was back to being comfy so naturally old habits returned.

The idea was to slowly cut down but i think i may get rid of a few to make me more obligated. Hell I still havent deleted animal crossing but ironically that doesnt or has never seen me obsess over it, its nice and casual without the huge rush so i play purely for the joy than endorphines.
>>
Name ONE (1) good game worth playing right now
>>
>>17466253
Set yourself to play only one game for an hour or less, you don't play other games unless you finish that one.
>>
>>17466875
I dont keep up with trends in gaming I just obsess over a select few for years. Cant think of any new ones worth it though.

>>17466887
Its sticking to that is the issue. I have the "just one more" mindset in full. Which turns to two hours.
>>
>VIDEO GAMES ARE THE MOST WORTHLESS TIME SINK IN THE WORLD AND YOU'VE GOTTA BE AN INBRED RETARD TO THINK OTHERWISE

>GO READ A BOOK INSTEAD
>>
>>17466253
Surround yourself with friends that indulge in/have a hobby you are interested in, it's that ez
