hey /adv/ this post will probably turn out long so please bare with me

basically this weekend the internet connection I've been using has been very unstable and I'd like some help on how to fix it or at least figure out what the problem is, it's acted this way before but it's never been this bad. I've done some googling and nothing has helped so far but I also have a different situation than most, would really appreciate some advice

I should start by explaining my somewhat unique situation anyways: I have a wifi range extender that I use to connect to an xfinity public hotspot

they charge you money for access, but offer 2 free hour sessions a month, however I found out that you can get free internet this way with a program called technitium MAC address changer which does as the name implies and allows you tons of free sessions

not sure how much of an impact on the issue this has but I found a MAC address by chance that somehow is like permanently free, with other addresses I had to change every hour when my session ran out but my session lasts forever on this one

the problem is recently I got that yellow caution sign in the connection status bar and it said said I was connected to an unidentified network with no access, now it either reaches this point quickly or it takes a long time while it attempts to connect and "identify" the network

changing the MAC address to a different one didn't work, neither did restoring my original MAC address. So far the only thing that has fixed my internet (temporarily at that) is troubleshooting in network diagnostics when it fixes the problems it detects automatically. But even then, most of the times I tried it, network diagnostics either didn't detect any problem or it was unable to automatically correct what it detected. The error I saw the most was "wireless network connection 3 doesn't have a valid IP configuration"

to be continued
>>
What does this IP configuration error mean? It sounds like something that could be related to my method of connecting to the internet, but I'm really not sure.

Whenever my session runs out normally, or when I connect with a new address, I connect to the internet fine but I'm redirected to an xfinity sign-up page where I start the session. This error started when I hadn't changed the address or anything, and it's definitely the same address that always works (and still sometimes does) so I don't think it has to do with the legitimacy of the method itself

I've also tried to re-start the extender/internet in every possible way but simply disabling and re-enabling it never did the trick. I also tried connecting without the extender and it didn't work but I don't know how long it would normally take to connect to it that way.

What could the real problem be? I'm pretty sure it's not the extender (I did manage to connect to another public network but the connection is only randomly available and I had only 1 bar and couldn't load any pages so it's hard to be sure) and I don't know if it's my computer or xfinity at fault here.

If you've used an xfinity public hotspot, can you confirm that xfinity has been down (with the problem being on their end) but seemingly available when you don't try connecting to it? How probable is it that my windows network diagnostics were wrong, that it was a different issue or that it was xfinity's fault? Why is network diagnostics able to fix the issue occasionally but not usually?

accidentally deleted this paragraph when I was removing some unnecessary information

This problem has occurred occasionally in the past, but every other time I just unplugged my internet, went to sleep, and woke up to it working again. This led me to believe that the problem was on xfinity's end, but I can't test it with other networks as no unprotected ones are in range. I do know that regardless of my connection, the xfinity hotspot is ALWAYS available, it just doesn't work after I connect to it. I also always have full bars and the wifi extender's program always displays varying levels of speed as if I'm actually connected.

I realized a probable source for the problem while typing this all out. Although it wasn't the case in past occurrences, every time that my internet failed after working this weekend has been while torrenting. I didn't consider it would have this effect on my internet, as I've torrented a lot in the past

The problem always came back shortly after network diagnostics fixed it, but I just tried leaving my torrents alone and now it's lasted for over an hour. The problem also started while I was torrenting last night. I should have tried this before writing the previous posts, but I'm still not sure if it's the problem as earlier in the week I got this issue but wasn't torrenting

>start torrent
>average-solid speeds (for free net anyways, like 60-200 kbs)
>slows down after a bit to like 5-30
>unplug extender and plug it back in, which has helped jump start my torrents plenty of times before when they were being slow
>speed goes to like 200 kbs minimum almost instantly
>within 5 minutes the connection dies
>get IP configuration error again

could download speeds that are too "fast" put a strain on my shitty connection or something and cause it to break until I fix it again? Would xfinity throttle some specific user's connection completely like that for such a low number? I've gotten 1mbs on this connection and been fine in the past. I mean if they kept having to do it wouldn't they have a better way to lock me out? What does a valid IP configuration have to do with this kind of thing? It's not like I did anything to change it, unplugging the extender never disrupted it before and it seems to be the only thing that fixes the torrent speed issue (which always drops to snail speeds)

and as I was typing this my internet died again of its own volition without me torrenting or even loading any new pages, so maybe that isn't the issue here

I should have written this more succinctly and won't get any replies but oh well I'll check this thread once in a while anyways
