I'm 24 and looking to get my shit together. I don't have a college but I do have college debt, I'm a part of my states national guard, I work full time for 14$/hr with benefits, I have no dependents.

I'm sure there are other anons like me, can we have a thread where we share advice?

I left my last job and they moved my measly 1k retirement thing to an IRA. What can I do with that? Leave it alone, reinvest it, take it to new job?

Are there any resources for people who want to get their feet wet investing? Get in here, I know you're out there

Leave it alone, when you retire it still won't be much but in 40 years it'll be a few times more than what it is now.

Your #1 priority is paying down that debt. As a general rule you should try to budget your money as 1/3 for housing, 1/3 for expenses, and 1/3 for savings. That savings third should be used first to set up a cushion emergency fund of about 5k that you leave in the bank and never touch unless you lose your job or have unexpected medical or auto bills. Once you have that then start using your savings third of your paycheck to pay down your debt so you can minimize the interest.

After you're debt free you can start investing to save for retirement or major purchases like a home. Personally I favor using a vanguard s&p500 index fund for the bulk of my portfolio since it mirrors the market and has very low fees.

Also if your job has a 401k make sure to pay into it atleast up to employer match since it's literally free money. Also when you put money into a 401k it's pre-tax value (up to a limit, but you'll never come near it at 14/hr) so that's better than taking your pay which already got hit by payroll taxes and investing it on your own, since you'll have to pay capital gains tax when you cash it out.

Right now the ira gets .1% interest I think? Should I try to find another plan with the same bank? Or just leave it like it is and grow slowly? In 30+ years it'll be 8-9k I think.

And yeah, the debt needs to come first. If I added right, it'll all be gone before my next birthday, in January.

What about stock? I'm invested in my company for about 500$ or so, what kinda long term investments are good for people like me? Just land?

that's a retail bank IRA not a real one I don't even know if it has the same tax advantages

also holding a single company stock is just about the worst thing you can do with your savings

Go to Reddit personalfinance and read the sidebar

Yeah they just kinda gave it to me for brunt with them, so it's available to cash out?

But yeah I'll check out what you suggested, I know I've read a lot of threads and gotten good advice here, I figured someone might benefit from this discussion somehow.
