Try having a look at Bootstrap. The tutorials give you an idea of how to get an initial something going. Also if you're looking for design inspiration, AWWARDS has always been solid.

Putting vertical bars on either side of the middle would do a lot though. You could easily make them dark blue or dark green or something. The full black just looks downright bad and makes your eyes go everywhere on the page. There's no focus area, your eyes drift off the text way too easily. Not sure if that makes sense.

Having more pictures would help a lot too. I'm sure you can stomach some dark pics.
