Complicated question. For me personally, it is a matter of maturity. Of knowing who you are and what you want out of life, being able to take your responsibilities and cope with setbacks within reason. Of course, I would describe a forty five year old with zero insight in herself or deeper concerns in life as a woman neutrally, but if I hear just the word I think of a specific level of maturity. And to be of age but incapable of keeping your head up and dealing with your own life, you're more a faded girl than a woman.

As for calling someone a woman or a girl in everyday life, I think it depends on the tone and circumstances. I am twenty three and referred to as a woman when it's official, I am a woman to my doctor, because I'm grown. But my friends would never describe me as that and it's not because they think I'm a child or something, but it is a term of endearment in a way, placing the focus on being young and still figuring yourself out more than on technically being an adult. I think it is similar for guys my age, and vice versa: I think of them as guys, not men. Because you see each other's ongoing development and struggles, and see each other as peers and there's still a level of mythology around "real adults" there.

I incidentally have just read a piece on how sometimes women shy away from the "woman" label because it is seen as a stiff and unflattering "category" that makes people think of someone past her prime. Whereas "girl" is more forgiving and informal. I can't say I ever felt that way about it, but just wanted to include it.
