Hey /adv/. I am a girl who used to never do any sports. Recently I am into jogging and swimming. How much should I aim to jog/swim per week? I want to improve the distance that I can run/swim without stopping. Also, if I run a lot, will the distance that I can swim without stopping also improve (i.e. is improving one skills correlated to improve the other)? Thanks?

you do as much swimming as possible because you have exactly 27 days left of summer until you get insta hypothermia

Running is something you should take slow getting into it.

If you feel any soreness in the ankles or legs, espeically anything sharp, then take a few days off.

Swimming is a bit more flexible.

I say do an amount (of both) that you feel comfortable sticking with. Like, if you feel like you can for sure do 3 days a week, do that.

And then add to that little by little.

Instead of getting really into it for a month and then getting bored.

This post is gud

Definitely. As your cardio and aerobic systems improve you will find both exercises easier. They use your muscles in different ways though, so if you enjoy both you ought to do both.

>How much should I aim to jog/swim per week?
I would recommend only going for a serious workout every second day or so; a light run or especially a swim (swimming is easier on the body) each day never hurts though. Test your limits and time / measure yourself and try to improve in small increments. Run an extra minute or two every week or two. If you find it easier to push yourself faster than that, go for it, but always be careful.

Remember to stretch before and after exercise; you'll be thanking yourself later for doing so.

The best thing you can do to improve your ability is eat a good breakfast and drink lots of water.

Consider (also) asking such questions in /fit/ , there's usually a "running general" thread somewhere in the catalog (currently http://boards.4chan.org/fit/thread/38174644). There's quite a bit more shit-posting and trolling than on /adv/ I guess, but it might be worth sifting through the crap.

There's quite a bit of correlation between running and swimming. General cardiovascular health carries over pretty much completely. Muscle development not so much, but since you're mostly aiming for distance/endurance, not speed/strength, that matters less.
If you want to be good at both, you should definitely aim to do at both regularly though (even if it's not exactly 50/50).
On a side-note : don't forget that running is significantly more stressful on the joints than swimming (though good running form and good shoes help).

Physically, almost everyone (that's healthy and relatively young) can (eventually) handle 30-120 minutes of low intensity cardio per day, 4-6 days per week.
But you want to build up slowly, the general rule is that even when you feel you can do more, try to limit yourself to an increase of 5-10 % total load per week.
Also take into account burn-out / boredom. It's better to consistently work out a bit than to go crazy for a while and then stop.
