Medfag here. The TV trope of waking up from a coma after X years and being completely fine is a lie. A large proportion of people don't recover at all if they're not conscious after a few days. Those who do suffer debilitating brain damage. Comas lasting years are nearly unheard of and the few patients who have undergone them all have had moderate to severe permenant brain damage as a result.
