You should buy it. Different heroes have different learning curves. It's a decent competitive outlet. I predict it will be around for a really long ass time, like WoW or TF2. Yes you will get a lot of hours out of it if you like it - I am pretty busy but I have about 40 hours in it so far and not bored yet.

Get it. It's pretty damn addictive, and the curve ain't bad depending on which heroes you're playing.
If you can aim, Soldier:76 and McCree are good starting choices.
If you can't aim and don't give a shit, support and tanks are good to start with but try to train with:
Custom game
Skirmish mode
Ana AI hard on both teams
200% hp
25% spawn time
Headshot only
Train for 30 mins a day.

Have fun and don't main snipers.
