What would be better for my career: A degree in sound design, or a degree in music composition?

Pic unrelated.

Music production is one of those careers where a solid portfolio is better than a degree every fucking time.

I'm not saying definitely don't go to college for it. Sound design is probably better for getting an actual job. And school can help hook you up with internships and connections.

But if there's any way that you can just jump right in without school, I think you'll be so much better off--financially and professionally.

If you think you just HAVE to have a degree, and you really want to work in music, get one in business or marketing.

Also, the music industry is shrinking (internet piracy, streaming, etc.), so jobs are drying up.

Whichever will help you ask "do you want fries with that?" the most.

>Music production
Sorry, when did I say I wanted to be in production? Also I've been working on music already for over five years and it won't make a dent on me financially. My goal is to get a job in soundtracks and having a degree definitely helps more than saying "I'm indie." Why did I even come here for advice? Even when people try to give you a good answer here they fall flat on their face.

You're fucking welcome.

If you've really been working in music for five years, I'd expect that you'd have some solid contacts to ask rather than people on a fucking internet message board.

Having a degree doesn't mean you're not indie.

And having a solid portfolio is still better than having a damn degree.

>Says nothing about what his "career" is in OP
>Gets mad at people for not reading his mind

ur a cunt

Why are you being such a faggot? He gave you decent advice, and "production" is not mutually exclusive from film score/soundtrack work. Jesus, what a cunt.

And he's right, by the way. A degree can't hurt, it can help in many ways, but it doesn't mean shit if your work isn't any good. Talent can't be taught.

How was anybody supposed to know that if you didn't mention it? We can't read your mind.

Rude as hell.
