My mother committed suicide last week. It sucked ass. My father passed 2 years ago, so everything is on my brother and me to take care of everything. I'm on my own, so this doesn't all apply to me. I'll greentext the relevant details

I was hoping someone could help me find out where to start with everything. What we want to do is sell the house and hoping that we make some money on it. People around us are giving contradictory advice, and I'm starting to become paralyzed with fear and anxiety. Here's what we've done so far
>Ensured taxes are paid on the house for the next quarter
>Contacted her union, received the paperwork to receive the life insurance
>Went to the bank, started the process of claiming her funds (easy we were listed in trust of her account)
So... do I talk to the mortgage company? Judge of Probate? I'm really feeling lost in the woods here.

Try getting a consultation from a real estate agent or something. At the very least they can point you in the right direction.

Get yourself a lawyer who specialises in wills and estates. Don't try to do this all yourself. Don't expect this all to be over quickly though, it can take forever, especially if she didn't have a will.

I can second this. Even if everything goes smoothly, closing out an estate can take over a year.
Make copies of EVERYTHING. It's easier to pay a few bucks up front for an official copy you'll end up not needing than to go back and stand in lines again.
A lawyer will be worth the money. This can get complicated.

Don't do shit like selling a house or whatever then. Do cancel things like utilities and other services that are in her name if you're not using them, but don't go making big decisions without consulting a lawyer. And when you do, go with your brother.

Unfortunately for now my brother has nowhere else to go. He works full time but we live in a very expensive part of the country. I moved out a year ago but he was still at home.

Spend a couple of hundred dollars by having the lawyer who drew up the will advise you and handle the details.
