I've considered calling a suicide hotline for help, but I heard they contact the police in some cases. I'm scared they're going to detain me for being unhappy with myself.

They're not all that helpful. I called the Samaritans once after backing away from hanging myself. I spoke to a nice old lady who said "oh that must be horrible" a lot.

Don't do it, Anon. In this day and age they log everything, whether they tell you or not. All of these posts are logged and archived and it's not difficult to track down unique posters.

But when you call one of those lines, at least in the USA, they are traced immediately (and have been for at least 25 years) and the operators seem trained to b8 people into making threats so the cops can show up.

Find an IRC channel or something, but for god's sake don't call one of those lines. They're also recorded.
