Might as well get /adv/'s take on this

How much can you lie about on a resume/CV and get away with? How much do companies really dig into what you say/list? How much are they even legally allowed to check into?

I have friends who have made outrageous claims on resumes, and gotten jobs with them with seemingly no ill effect

Well a CV can be easily background checked because it details your school record and that's pretty public. As for resume, they usually ask for references to discourage this.
>>
Things its fine to lie about
>Lower level education, or if you think the company won't do extensive background checks
>Prior employment older than 5 years
>Skills not relevant to the job
>The exact level of which you are qualified in a skill

Things its not okay to lie about
>Certifications, upper level education
>Employment within the last 5 years
>Skills relevant to the job
>Skills you cannot successfully bluff your way around or are unable to demonstrate basic understanding of but interest in learning

See the education bit is what throws me, because I've been told by multiple sources at this point an employer has no way to verify a degree short of asking you to personally provide a transcript

It's only a lie if you don't tell the truth. If you tell them something and they misinterpret it, that's on them. Not my fault you thought I actually built databases when all I did was access the information on them and showed others how to navigate it.

Hell, if I built databases, why would I had applied for a job that pays significantly less than a database architect?

depends on your country. In many more socialist-leaning countries they are all open for the public. Not sure about the US, which many people will obviously be interested about.

In any case, I would "beautify" the text, i.e. make information seem like slightly more relevant than it actually is. In the occasion where something really comes out, you might be called out on it, defamed or even put on a blacklist that other employers in similar fields use, making your life really hard.

See >>17373008.

It also really depends by "lie". For example I omitted my last job position because my employer terminated it early due to shady reasons (I was working illegally low hours but the official excuse was "I shouldn't have hired you to begin with) and this was down without notice either.

This came up with my latest employer but unlike outright lying it was simple omission as I never said I never worked there to begin with. Fortunately my new employer is a complete sweetheart and was all done and dusted. I got lucky.

Its one thing to ommit something like a very short employment, its quite another to add something on your C.V which is fabricated.

My friend got a 2.2 in her degree and changed it to 2.1. She is doing ok so far in her job but god forbid someone checked it. It really depends on the risk but as a matter of preference I don't besides ommitting something, especially if its not related to the position I would be going for.
