I'm a white guy who knows next to nothing about black culture, so feel free to ignore my advice, but from what little I understand, a black barbershop is a social hub. It's s place where black people can be themselves, but also where they can contemplate and talk about what it is to be black in an often racially insensative America.

I think if you go there, be prepared to be mocked a little, teased perhaps more than you're used to, or even to feel unwelcome by some patrons.

If you suffer through it, though, and continue to return there, it could be a culture-expanding experience. You would get a better understanding of black culture than most white people ever get, even if that understanding is mostly superficial.

I confess I'm too socially anxious to go to such a place alone. I would *have* to bring a black friend, and I've basically only got one. Still, I have a real desire to shed my racial ignorance.

If you go, come back and tell us about it, anon. Maybe I can be shamed into leaving my racially ignorant comfort bubble.

Racial dynamics and tensions in the US are really very complicated. There is a lot of history that makes interracial interaction a bit of a mine field. If we want it to go away, however, we have to start walking that minefield.
