The basic problem is, we just don't know. In particular, most of the information we have on pedophilia comes from child molesters, who may not be the most representative group. We don't know much at all about non-offending pedophiles because society has shit on them so much that we're afraid to do the science: scientists have their academic future to think about so prefer not to touch material that's career suicide, and non-offending pedos are afraid to out themselves to anyone at all, even strictly confidential scientists. And there would be questions of objectivity.

And that's terrible. Imagine if life-like sex dolls were very effective at deflecting urges away from children. Imagine how many people we could spare from serious serious damage.

Then again, there's plenty of reasons to believe such dolls would be counterproductive: catharsis can somewhat unintuitively intensify a feeling (as an anon above points out), also an interplay between the doll heightening frustration by being a poor proxy and desensitization effects found in many artificial stimuli can lead a person to "graduate" to harder stuff.

So there's a lot to consider here, but the most honest answer is, "We just don't know"

im from the perspective of the path of least amount of resistance. which sounds easier to do? Sure, I agree but there is always the risk that they get tired of the doll and will start to want the real deal even more, while the ones who suppressed it, might get over wanting to fuck anybody. Doubt there is any clear solution.

I am leaning more to the pro dolls side, perhaps selling them in combination with/after therapist sessions ... shit, might open up a market for illegal sex dolls.
