Considering your situation, my best advice is just to increase your defenses. Always have an escape. Like always have at least two different routes in mind that you can run away to should the crackhead get aggressive again.

Always have a working cell phone on you.

Work on your running in your off time (not that it should be that hard to outrun a crackhead).

Also, watch some of the billion self defense takedown videos on Youtube. It won't make you le karate master, but it would probably benefit you some proper techniques to take someone to the ground if you have no other choice.

Don't listen to these guys. A knife is very ineffective for self-defense. Now, a baton or a gun would be effective, but using one could get you in serious legal trouble.
