Watch them -all of them- and then start looking for board-gaming groups and meetups in your area. I am only too aware of old 4chan's nature. /r9k/ isn't a callback to that nature in general, though. Old 4chan was, as you note, a place for foreveralone guys and others who had been treated unfairly by the societies in which they grew up. /r9k/ represents those for whom this treatment was entirely fair: related to old 4chan's nature, but not quite the same thing.

I don't desire a safe space for anyone. Quite the opposite: I believe the world and the people in it, are much better off "unsafe", learning courage and resiliency rather than retreating to safety at the slightest hint of adversity. For that reason, I see great value in tearing safe spaces down. But that means ALL safe spaces, including the hugboxes that the robots and /pol/tards have built for themselves. And they are the low-hanging fruit in the current climate.
