I've broken up with a friend of 8 years because my feelings for her went going from platonic to romantic. She was pretty much my best friend and understood me on a level I don't think anyone else ever has.

So a few weeks ago I had an honest conversation with her while drinking and I said I was effectively ending our relationship because of the way I felt about her. She got very upset about it and so did I but we ended the evening on a good note because she got where I was coming from. I think I made the right choice because she was in a long term relationship where she was very happy and hanging out with her was starting to become painful for me so I thought it would be best to get a clean break and move on.

Now though, I'm starting to wonder if I fucked up big time. Did I let my stupid feelings get in the way of the best friendship I've ever had? Should I have just stfu and hoped this would go away? Input and ideas from people who've been in this situation would be much appreciated.

You're going to be fine, a break is something everyone needs sometimes. especially if its causing you some serious strife.

On the other side of that, if she really was just the bee's knees and your best friend then surely she knows and its hard for her. Make it clear when you feel like circumstances would merit talking again. Missing out on great friendship is a plague.

Exactly. Maybe I'll get back in touch after a year off. Maybe things'll be different then.

Still talk to her or she'll move on entirely.

She probably crying to her partner now about it and he probably knows you did it because you were romantically attracted to her. So when you come back and they're still together it'll be worse.

Find a girlfriend or something or talk it out with your friend

Throwing yourself at a girl just to get over another one never seems like a good idea to me.
