so i just moved to a new state and i have no idea what to do regarding my car and insurance. my parents gifted me the car right before i left but we only filled out the bill of sale and did nothing else about it. on top of that, since i moved out of home i am no longer covered by my parent's car insurance policy.
ive been hearing very different things about what to do first. some people have told me that i will need to sign up for a new insurance policy before registering the car, while others have told me i'd need to register the car before signing up for a new insurance policy.
on top of that, since the car was gifted to me right before moving, im guessing there will be additional documents i'll need to fill out.
and what about emission tests? would i need to do that before registering the car?
there's always a 3 hour line at the local dmv office and i'd like to get things done in one trip. can anyone tell me where i can go to find some answers? the official dmv.gov website is so confusing.
bump. ANY help would be great here.

Call the tax office (or whatever state office handles car registrations where you are) and ask...

Also you don't do car registration at the DMV in my state at least... so, best check...
Are you moving TO california or FROM?
