Depends on the lore. D&D? Sure, Half-Orcs are a thing. Elder Scrolls? It seems like no species can cross breed since we've never seen any of mixed race. Warhammer/40k? From what I recall they're biologically engineered and there are no females. Tolkien? He confirmed female Orcs did exist but we never see them and like TES, the races of Middle Earth don't seem biologically compatible.

In TES, half-breeds do occur. They often (thanks to engine limitations) appear as one race or another. But there's a ton throughout the lore. Supposedly, Berenziah had Tiber Septim's child, there was also that orc guy in Oblivion who was half-vampire. Bretons have mer blood, which is why they're so magically inclined.

Half-Breeds barely change and more often than not they can't even reproduce. Bretons are a product of generations of Nedic and Aldmer relations and they are still largely men race.

As a general rule of thumb the child is of race of the mother and has some traits of the father, see the gray orc, he was Orc (his mother) and has vampiric skin (father). But no substantial hybrids can be created unless there was ton and ton of inter generational mixing and even then Bretons are as far as you can go it seems since they had so many generations to fucking create a full hybrid.

There is a reason as to why it works this way, it's because genetics do not exist in Elder Scrolls.

All mortals are potentially Ada (spirits) that are stabilized and bound to Mundus. Generally all of TES is magical innately, it's not one of those universes where magic is something seperate or different, everything is literally made of creatia and Ae, it's all magic.

Souls are referenced as Anuic remnant and how souls go and come from Dreamsleeve, possibly being recycled/reincarnated, if we are to believe metaphysical fuckheads like Mankar Camoran. They are very powerful and very important, hell N'Gasta says that the aging process exists only because ultimately bodies are not powerful enough to hold what is inside of them (i.e. soul and the magic inside of the soul).
Add to that the fact that functions of the soul and magica storing body seem to be necessary for proper bodily functions, also all races seem to have stabilized in mildly different way, some crazier than others like Bosmer and that the way they stabilized is tied to their everyday life and very being. So souls, and more specifically the way the soul is bound to the mortal body is extremely important to the well being and very life of someone on Mundus.

I believe that it is pretty safe to assume that since the children, when they are born, incarnate as souls from dreamsleeve in the Uterus of their mother and need to find the way to stabilize to the mortal coil, they stabilize the same way their mother did. Since the matters/cells which they will be made of contains some magicka/energies of the father they do get affected, but ultimately the very binding ritual to the mortal plane is identical to that of the mother, hence why the child will be similar to the mother but with small variations of the father.
Actual mixes would create serious issues, like Valenwood, Y'ffre and Green Pact since all Bosmer by birth are bound to said three.

Whether it's justified by the TES lore clusterfuck or not, I still don't like it, because I think it closes off creative possibilities for half-breed characters. What colour do you prefer on orcs? Green? I really like the uncorrupted orcs in Warcraft. They're really cute, but I also guess they lose some of the 'exotic' factor since they have a human skintone instead of varying shades of green.

Orcs in Tolkien are goblins, he uses the term interchangably. Uruks, the largest Orcs, are supposed to be 'nearly as tall as a man'. They don't produce good quality armour or weapons, they just overwhelm their opponents with sheer numbers and savagery.

Hence it looks retarded when you've got 4ft tall Dorfs, a Hobbit and human fishermen taking down hundreds of 7ft tall linebackers in full plate harnesses, instead of the Hobbit-sized creatures like in the book.
