Virgin Island, my first and biggest recommendation. Awesome game.

After that, Sangeki of Gear, Ariadne, Magica, Arms Devicer, Married Warrior Emma, Thug Hero Party, Rhode's Fortress, Hypnosis Aristocracy, and Salvation. All of those have full translations and were enjoyable. There are more on ULMF as well, I just have not tried them.

Alpha Centauri was one of the best games of all time and it was one entirely due to its characters and story.

Beyond Earth tried to be SMAC while suffering under being a mod and essentially removing all story and characters. Also it's boring and the color pallette is terrible.

The canon is that Dierdre wins. Most factions don't spell out who kills them, but some of it is pretty clear.

1: Dierdre kills the Spartans in the mid-late game, as I already mentioned.

2: Yang also goes down around this time, though it's not clear who does him in. If you factor in the expansion it's clear that the Free Drones kill him, but they don't survive him for long.

3: Miriam goes from nutjob to the secret voice of reason (in the fluff anyway, her AI is fucking nuts). She dies during a final assault through a gate during the late game. It's not spelled out against who, but it's probably Zakharov. She's also responsible for the Elite Christian Hackers meme.

4: I'm not at all certain who kills Lal. It's implied during at least one video that they were at war with Morgan, however. So Morgan may have killed Lal.

5: Morgan himself becomes a brain in a jar, or it's implied he is. It's not certain who kills him.

6: Zakharov lasts 'till the end, at which point he loses to Dierdre in the race to ascend due to the end game mindworm flood.

Lots of other stuff is implied too but I haven't played it in a long time and don't remember most of it, alas.
