Quarians are confirmed to be have cybernetic augmentations. Grunt even comments that quarians are hard to kill compared to the asari, salarians, and even humans (ignoring the obvious risks of infection afterwards). Unless quarians have innate crab-armor then it's likely quarian suits aren't just catsuits or they're heavily Adam Jensen'd up.

So you could argue that a conflict with the suit interface and the quarian's augs could cause a malfunction. At least that's the way I'm looking at it.

It's smut, I probably shouldn't be over-thinking it in the first place.

Quarians and Turians have a lot in common. I wouldn't be surprised if Quarians have some kind of dermal plating. That's why I've always liked the interpretation in pic related. Looks like she has sub-dermal plating in several places. Maybe it's more flexible and located under the skin, as opposed to hard, over the skin plating like Turians have. Combined with an armored suit and cybernetic enhancements, that would more than account for Grunt's comments.

They actually have absolutely nothing in common.

They are composed of same handed proteins, that originated on two different worlds. Exactly the same thing as with the rest of the sapients consisting of Levo instead of Dextro-proteins. While most sapients of whatever protein structure share bipedalism, similar facial structure etc, those can be easily accounted as mere cases of convergent evolution.

It's also common knowledge that the plating on Turians is something they share with a lot of other fauna native to their homeworld which is an evolutionary adaptation to higher amount of radiation reaching the surface of planet. Quarians etc fauna on Quarian home world have not had any evolutionary pressure to favour something like that.

BUT If Quarians did come with some sort of 'plating', that would be a mere coinsidence, still having absolutely nothing to do with Turians sharing the same handed proteins.

The remains of the Siroco drifted silently through space. Ripped to pieces by heavy railgun fire and leaking oxygen from multiple areas, the forward section was all that was left of the mercenary destroyer. Its assailant had long since departed, dragging a trail of debris in the wake of their Alcubierre jump. The Siroco was beginning to sink into the gravity well of the gas giant below, towards inevitable destruction in its atmosphere. Above the drifting hulk, space rippled and seemed to distort, before another ship suddenly popped into existence. Drifting clear of the remains of their Alcubierre Field, the new vessel lit up its sublight thrusters and began to match orbit with the crippled Soroco, scanning it with long range sens#$@*&#$^&....

I guess I should explain who I am and what we were doing here. I'm Master Chief Petty Officer Maara Soval, Union of Free Systems Navy. I'm the Boatswain of the UFSS Sabre, a Blade-class stealth frigate currently flying under privateer colors on a scouting assignment. See, this was in 2762 when the Galactic Civil War was just starting to really ratchet up. The Conglomerate was losing ground to relentless rebel assaults both inside and outside its borders. It was only a matter of time before us in the Free Systems got dragged into the war. There's no love lost between the Conglomerate and the Free Systems, but they had stopped just short of destroying us 200 years ago, and nobody wanted to commit to the rebel cause unless it was a guaranteed victory. However there was concern that if we avoided an alliance for too long, the rebels would turn on us. There had been rumblings of dissent in the lower classes for decades, and rebel sympathies were common among xenos. The UFSS Sabre, along with all of her sister ships, were dispatched into Conglomerate space under false flags, to scout for Conglomerate defenses, troop movements and other intelligence. The objective, according to the Captain, was to determine the state of the Conglomerate war-machine around our borders, and sniff out any weaknesses that would make a war winnable.

This was kind of a big deal for a number of reasons. For one, it was the first time Union Navy ships with mixed Human and Xeno crews were being trusted with an important mission. It wasn't a total victory, of course. Commissions were still only issued to Humans, so as a Sha'dee I had no chance of promotion past Master Chief. But it was a baby step, and if me and the aliens in my deck crew could prove ourselves, it might open up more areas of the military to desegregation. I had every confidence that we would, as well.

Many had been concerned that Xenos, especially smaller, weaker Xenos like my species, would be unable to maintain discipline and authority over Human sailors. This was, of course, bunk. A lot of people think Sha'dee are all meek and timid, but you'd be surprised how quickly Humans do what you want when you hiss at them from within biting distance. Besides, on a tiny ship like the Sabre, you either learn to get along, or you wash out. We're technically a frigate in terms of size-class, but we operate a lot more like the submarines of ancient terrestrial navies. Quarters are very close, and everyone has to trust everyone else, or we all die.

So yeah, to get back to the story. We had detected radiation from the battle while rigged for silent running just outside the system. The Conglomerate Dreadnought had been lurking around here for a few days, and we had been trying to sneak our way to a position where we could make an Alcubierre jump without being detected by the Dreadnought. Then out of nowhere this destroyer had jumped in, which was apparently what the Dreadnought had been waiting for, because they opened fire almost immediately. The smaller ship didn't have a chance, their Alcubierre rings were fucked before they had time to react and there's no way you're outrunning a Manticore-class Dreadnought at sublight speeds in a little destroyer. We detected the Dreadnought leaving and decided to move in to investigate. Operating for extended periods in deep space, you salvage extra supplies whenever you get the chance, and a wrecked destroyer could be a valuable source of fuel, food supplies, ammunition, etc.

I was on the bridge as we made the approach. The crew was tired after three days of operating at Condition 2, but with the Dreadnought gone we could finally return to Condition 3 and breathe easy. As the highest ranking deck officer, I was Captain Ellis's 4rd Mate, and spent a good deal of time both on the bridge and with the crewmen.

"Sensors, report." Captain Ellis ordered, leaning in to survey the image of the bisected destroyer on our main screen.

"Aye Sir, Sensors report the object as the Siroco, a sanctioned warship registered in the Conglomerate as PMWS-NICC 5493-877950. She's property of a smaller Naval PMC called Syren Naval Security Limited. She's running on emergency power and appears to have no signs of life onboard." Replied Lt. Carey Sullivan, our Chief Sensor Officer.

"Are conditions onboard capable of supporting life?" Ellis questioned further.

"Radiation and heat levels are within acceptable parameters. Artificial gravity is functional somehow, but I don't know for how long. She's leaking oxygen rapidly, but if someone had a suit or an emergency mask they could still be alive. However, we detected several hull breaches that were not the result of weapons fire. Edge geometry suggests a cutting laser or similar breaching tool was used. If we assume these indicate the ship was boarded, it is unlikely there are any survivors. Sir."

"Well, there's only one way to find out. Master Chief Soval, assemble an away team and take Skiff B over to that ship. We'll search her the old fashioned way, deck by deck. I don't want any nasty surprises after we begin salvage operations. And while you're there, see if you can figure out why they were attacked." The Captain ordered, turning to me.

"Aye aye, Sir. I'll assemble the away team and prepare to depart on your command." I snapped, standing up and saluting.

"Very good, Master Chief. Dismissed."

I left the bridge and headed down towards the main ready deck as general quarters was sounded. When I got there, I scanned the duty roster to see who was available for away team duties. The Sabre was too small to warrant a Marine compliment, so most of our enlisted crewmen were trained to serve as naval infantry if necessary. Having chosen my team, I patched into the ship's 1MC line.

Within five minutes, my crewmen had filtered into the ready deck and were standing at attention.

"Alright boys, pay attention." I announced, pacing up and down the line with my arms crossed. "The Dreadnought we've been playing hide and seek with has destroyed another Conglomerate ship before departing the system. We're going over to search the wreckage, look for survivors, and see if we can't determine why they were lying in wait for one of their own ships. Lt. Abrams, go to the skiff bay and prepare B Skiff for launch. The rest of you proceed to Ship's Armory, I want full combat spacesuits for this one. There could be mercs still breathing, and we don't know what environmental conditions will be like over there. I'm also authorizing the use of kinetic weapons for this away mission. No point taking chances when the ship is already full of holes anyway."

Our pilot saluted and made for his station, while the rest of us marched to Ship's Armory to see to our kit. We were all already in our skinnies* and covvies**, so all we had to do was attach our armor plating and EVA gear, as well as our helmets and gloves. Since we were pretending to be Conglomerate privateers, our equipment was mostly generic stuff available from outfitters in Conglomerate Space, rather than official Union kit. As a result, modifications and sacrifices had to be made to fit alien bodies into gear designed for Humans. My tail, for one, which I had to pull into my coverall and wrap around my belly in order to fit into the EVA combat rig. My gloves needed alteration as well, the fourth finger being sewn to the third so that I could pass as Human with my visor down.

Once armor was seen to, weapons were collected and distributed. Myself and Ben Deane, our Corpsman, carried subguns, with Seamen Korth, Jannis and Oberlin carrying carbines. Petra Kane, my second in command for this mission, had the 25mm munitions launcher loaded with Hornets*** and a magazine of HEAP rounds just in case. With that, we headed for the skiff bay and made ready to disembark.

Our skiff approached the adrift hulk, extending its manipulator arms to latch onto the damaged hull. I had already shepherded my crew into the forward airlock, which opened as the skiff secured its grip. We pushed out and slowly floated over to the ship, using our EVA thrusters to rotate around so our magnetic boots could lock onto the hull. I led the party across the dead ship's outer skin, making our way towards one of the holes the enemy had cut for their own boarding parties. The sight that greeted us upon entering the hull was gruesome, but predictable.

The corridor we had entered was lined with bodies in power armor. Blood floated lazily in spheres where the artgrav was failing, and was splattered across the walls where it was still on. The boarding party clearly didn't give a shit about taking prisoners, these
were obviously kinetic and explosive wounds. As we made our way deeper into the ship, we could see scorch marks on the walls where the crew had tried to fight back with particle guns.

We found a control console where Oberlin could patch into what was left of the ship's intranet. With the maps he retrieved, we were able to divide the ship up into a reasonable search grid. Everyone was equipped with motion trackers, but science has yet to devise a better life signs detector than the electroneural lines nature had embedded in my flanks. I can use them to sense the presence of organic life within a 15 meter radius by feeling their neural activity. This meant we didn't have to search every room, we could simply walk down every corridor and I could scan for organic life in the adjacent rooms.

The carnage continued the deeper into the ship we got. At some point the crew had switched to kinetics as well, but it was too little too late. At this point, my hopes of finding anyone alive were not high. The Conglomerate seemed to have been very thorough. But, as we approached the bow, I felt something in my lines. A faint signal, coming from below and to the left, but definitely Human. I motioned for the team to stop, and informed the others. We located a lift and descended until I felt the signal was level with us. We moved carefully around it, until I had a solid fix on its position. The Human was in a storage locker off a service corridor. I ordered the team to spread out and converge on the Human's location. The door to the locker compartment had already been forced open, and there was nobody directly inside. The signature was coming from one of the lockers. On my signal, Korth and Jannis pried the locker door off its hinges, allowing the body within to spill out onto the deck.

It was definitely a Human, wearing light power armor. He seemed to be passed out but I could definitely sense he was alive. We carefully flipped him onto his back and Deane accessed his suit's computer system.

"He's almost out of onboard oxygen. Unconscious from lack of air, but otherwise fine. We got here just in time." My Corpsman informed us, pulling an emergency oxygen mask out of his medic's kit and prying the Human's faceplate off so he could attach it.

I was surprised at the sight of his face. He was young, couldn't be more than 18 or 19. Not bad looking either, for a Human.

"Geez, he's just a kid. What's he doing in power armor?" I asked, lowering my gun and leaning in for a closer look.

"He's an Indent, most likely." Deane explained.

"Indent? What's that?" I asked, curiously.

"Indentured Servant. Basically a fancy term for Human slave. They have to do whatever the person who owns their contract tells them, until it elapses. Lot of low-end Merc outfits use them to bolster their numbers. They're usually just used as expendable cannon fodder." Deane explained. "Poor bastard's parents probably wound up in debt and had to sign indenturment contracts for the whole family."

"Hrm. Another day, another reason to hate the Conglomerate. Corpsman, find a way to patch that emergency tank into his suit's oxygen supply, we're taking him back to the ship. I don't sense any more life signs around here, and that air isn't going to last forever." I explained, straightening up. "Oberlin, Korth, go to the computer room and get as much as you can off the mainframe and AI banks. We'll meet you back at the skiff."

"Aye Sir."

"Aye Sir."

The two turned and left, while Deane began digging in the Indent's life support system for an auxiliary oxygen hookup. Once we could make his suit space-worthy again, I had Deane and Jannis carry him back to where we had entered, while me and Kane watched our 12 and 6. Once back on the skiff, we could open up his suit again and let him breathe in the vehicle's pressurized troop compartment.

The renewed oxygen supply was beginning to work its magic as Jannis and Deane secured him to a stretcher, and I sensed his brain activity increasing as though about to wake up. As he stirred, I bent over him and examined his face, watching his eyelids flutter and open. He saw me, then looking down, panicked as he realized he was restrained and began to struggle.

"Hold still!" I said calmly, reaching up to detach my helmet. "We're not with the Conglomerate, we're not going to hurt you. See?"

I lifted the helmet off and waggled my ears to shake the stiffness out of them. The Human boy blinked in surprise at the sight of a Sha'dee. And I mean, who can blame him. I'm fucking gorgeous.

"X-x-xeno?" He murmured, staring at me.

"Yeah, I'm a Xeno. My name's Maara. Now hold still and stay calm. We're going to bring you back to our ship so the Chief Medical Officer can make sure you're all there." I pushed his head gently back down onto the stretcher.

He was silent as we loaded Oberlin and Korth back onboard, then headed back to the ship.

"You find anything in the ship's computer system?" I asked, turning to Oberlin.

"Nope. They took the AI core and physically destroyed all the ship's mainframe harddrives. Backups too. They were thorough, these guys were professionals." She explained, shrugging her shoulders. "That Human there is probably your best bet if you wanna figure out what happened. I'll pull all the terminal drives when we go over with a proper salvage team, but I doubt they had time to hide something on one of them."

I nodded. Kora Oberlin, despite her Human-given surname, was a Sha'dee like myself. Our species has a way with computers; if Oberlin couldn't find anything, it wasn't there to find.

When we reached the ship, I turned our prisoner over to the Chief Medical Officer, an Aikan named Ekaas Kappa.

"When can I talk to him, Lieutenant?" I asked as the birdlike Xeno examined his new patient.

"Bosun, please. The man's had a traumatic experience. He needs time to rest, and I want to observe him for a few hours anyway. I'll inform the Captain when he's ready to talk." Kappa scolded me, shooing us off with one of his four arms.

This was fine by me. I wanted to find out what the Human knew, but I also had other duties. Organizing the salvage teams and coordinating the rest of the operation, to start.

It would end up being about 8 hours before I was able to get back to the Sabre, leaving a team to salvage the rest of the supplies I'd marked for retrieval. By this point my ready shift was over, and I could get out of the covvie and finally stretch my poor tail. Privateer duty really makes you miss serving in the border defense fleet, where we have covvies tailored to our species. I can mostly fit into covvies and other gear made for short Human females, but it's really weird walking without the use of my tail. It's hard to explain to a Human, but Sha'dee rely on our tails for balance and spatial awareness, so having it curled around my waist makes me feel like I'm tiptoeing all the time. Thankfully, the skinnies had to be form-fitting by design, and I prefer to just walk around in my skinnie when I don't have to be on duty. It feels freer, and as a bonus it's far more flattering than the coverall, which makes me look more like a cloth sack than a Sha'dee girl.

I was about to lie down and pull up a movie on my personal augreal glasses, when my duty comn received a text message. It was the Captain, ordering me to proceed to sickbay and oversee the Human kid's interrogation. I thought about throwing a uniform over my skinnie, but decided against it. I was tired, and wanted to get it over with. If the Human found it unsettling, all the better.

He was pretty average for a Human, maybe a little on the short side, with buzzed, sandy hair and a little bit of stubble around his chin. Barely an adult by Human standards. I sat down in Kappa's seat across the desk, and pushed the coffee towards the Human.

"I brought you some coffee. Humans like that, right?" I asked, leaning in to plant my elbows on the desk and steeple my fingers.

"Thanks..." He muttered quietly, looking up to take the cup.

"Can't stand it myself. It makes me sleepy." I replied, popping the top on my soda and taking a drink.

He sat there silently, staring at me but clearly trying to hide that fact.

"That's unfortunate. I take it you're not particularly loyal to the Conglomerate then?"

"Hell no!" He scowled. "My bosses weren't either, apparently."

"That was my next question. Why did they attack your ship?"

"We were carrying something. A data packet. I don't know what was in it, but I overheard some officers talking about blackmailing the Conglomerate with it. Our company was in some trouble, I think. They thought this data could get them out of it. It had something to do with the war."

My heart skipped a beat. This could be the exact thing we were sent here to look for.

"Where on the ship did they keep it?" I asked, containing my excitement.

"In the Captain's safe. I'm sure they took it when they boarded. But... I might have a copy."

"He doesn't know. He says he thinks it's military but that's about it. I would be willing to bet he didn't have time to read it, so you can't really blame him."
