You're going to have to delineate where the fill will end somehow ... you'll have to fill in the breaks in the lines.
I suppose you could use a color-replace brush and close off the gaps in, let's say, the hair, changing the white background color to hair colored lines all around the hair, filling in all the line gaps.
No layers or layer maps needed, but only because the original art is all black or white pixels with no grays.

Did that make sense?

I'm fairly new to photoshop but I have colored some things before but made the stupid decision to go over all the lines in black just to use the fill tool. I'll have to try when I'm back at my computer.

When I say 'color-replace' I mean the drawing tool that will change one color to another color wherever you stroke. It will not touch your black lines if you set it to replace your white backgrounds.
Find that tool and you can fill in those lines and color it all in with a simple fill.

I'd love to see someone color this one up, but with a twist. Instead of gaige's normal hair/lip/skin colors, use Maya's colors (aside from the black and white striped socks, those can stay normal), so its like Maya is cosplaying as gaige or vice versa. I'd like to not just 2nd (or, I guess 3rd) this, but I'd like to modify the request and provide some reference. So, pic-related, plus:

Modify request, if you're up for it (these are suggestions, not demands):

1) maybe do this as two separate images?

2) maybe enlarge the final effort slightly so it fills 1080 pixels of vertical space

3) if not two separate images, perhaps separate the images so that the final is a 1920 x 1080 wallpaper (even better if it's a 1920 x 1200 wallpaper, but with 90 pixels of "margin" at top and at bottom so it also fits 1920 x 1080 when cropped or centered) with one image offset to each side (I suggest original left side image be set on the right and right side image of the original set on the left of the final)

4) use the pic related with this post to develop a background, or develop a creative background from one of the reference images above if you are motivated to turn this into a wallpaper. At the very least, do not use glare, retina-searing white as the background ... use something (such as the original uncolored image) with a much more eye-friendly subdued coloration

Personally (and especially for a wallpaper) I'm not all that interested in a nude; well-colored panties would be quite fine.


Oh, I guess also ... the "Bakshi Productions" can remain if that makes you feel more comfortable ... but make it very discrete, opaque & set way out of obvious visual line. If you wish to add "colored by"I can live with that, but keep it very low key and unobtrusive. If you're willing to make this into a wallpaper, please feature the art first and foremost so that it can be enjoyed without some sort of eye-cancer distracting from it.

Usually I start by playing around with the fill (in a separate duplicate layer), then I do hand shading and stuff like that with the tablet. (RIP) Its not fancy, but it gets the job done. I used to use a mouse to get it done, but I just don't have the time/energy to go back to that way.

Anon, I just saw you still end up with a leetle bit of white at the edges of the lines. See if you can figure out the layer mask (did I call it a level mask? I'm an idiot.) it takes a black and white line drawing and turns it into a transparent layer with black lines. You color on a layer underneath that layer getting your tones all the way into the lines.
