Personally, I've got a fondness for sketches! Which is probably blindingly obvious.... but quality, however, is pretty fun to provide- particularly because going over the top rendering shit's a proper delight. It gives you the opportunity to learn a whole lot about lighting and junk! I suppose my artistic preferences boil down to what'll teach me the most thorough lessons, really.

What was the worst experience you had commissioning someone? Because I just had my first bad one and wanna gauge how bad it was

I do like to try new things with my drawings, however I have a right to decline your commission if I find it innapropriate or offensive.

Also, not mentioned are 5$ doodle commissions, which are sketchy but in flat colour.

I've told this one before but it needs retelling just in case people don't know what they're in for.

Like four years ago I started commissioning Darkyamatoman to do cheap ass comic pages for like 7-10 bucks, it was a good deal because he didn't charge more for extra characters.

This goes on well enough, I commission him regularly for like two and a half years, always pay him on time, no problems.

He ups his prices but they're still VERY affordable that I can still commission like ten page comics from him without breaking the bank.

Then six months down the line he stops talking to me. I don't mean we lose communication, I mean he won't talk to me.

He's posting art during this whole time so I know he ain't in jail or something, so four months later I set up a separate email and ask if he's open for comic commissions. He answers back within the fucking hour and we work out a deal. A month later he's got my five page comic done and I send him the payment. Now, he knows it's me at this point because my paypal is the same, and as soon as I try to contact him again he won't answer me.

I don't know what happened, but shit like that is more insulting them him just telling me he didn't want to do my comic commission.

After careful consideration, if I were to pay for each panel individually, it'd probably around $90. BUT, usually comics are discounted anywhere from 10-25%

If I'm completely honest though, why did it take 10 hours? What process took the longest?

Well, i first did a quick sketch and concept of eatch panel. Luckily, my client was on line for almost the whole time i was working so that helped. And, to be honest, it may have been longer then ten hours, i dont remember exactly since i did it in two sittings.

Then me and the client had to change about one or two things, add a panel. you know. Just hammering it out to have it as he wanted.

And, honestly getting good hd screen shots that i could use was a pain in the ass. And, even if i did not used them, i would have used them for references and have done quick paintings of them instead which i was also was working on but the client wanted it to look exactly like the cartoon, or as much as possible.

And then there was the inking, which was not that long of a process. Probably the easiest and the fastest part since the main concept was done and this was just making sure it was close to the sketches i sent the client.

The last but took a long time. And the coloring, getting them all right. Honestly, that was alot of work to make sure everything looked right. And, to try and make sure that other things like making a naked Jasmine look like she belonged to the rest of the comic.

Do you want to know the odd part is? Drawing Genie was pay fare the most fun and the most easy. I can see why he was designed since SO much of the film featured him. And, he just flows, super easy to draw over and over.

Still making spreadsheet. Worked through plaintext of Google Docs, now going back through adding non-written-out links and adding in more details off of the comm sheets. I notice the comm sheets tend to be more outdated than the google doc on details, so if there are conflicts I'll go with the doc.

Still need someone with a Google account to upload it/let me paste it in a blank spreadsheet when I'm done. I don't have a phone, so I can't make one. If anyone can, let me know and I'll put it up now and work on it from there.

It's coming out pretty well, lot of information to store.

Your work is not amateur so you can easily charge on the higher end of the porn artist scale. Ballpark estimate I'd put you at 30-40 per figure for sketch work, 50-70 per figure for basic colours/shading, as high as 70-90 per figure for more advanced painted stuff. As much as 30% more if you're willing to do nasty fetish stuff. Anywhere between +30-100% for backgrounds depending on complexity.

Not an artist, just a commissioner who's seen a lot of prices.

As far as getting your name out goes, here's a guide, consider it a gift:

0. Create a tumblr and a hentai-foundry. Post whatever to tumblr but keep HF with your best works

1. On tumblr: follow 100 blogs, like 100 posts and make 200 random posts (text posts filled with gibberish or whatever). Tumblr has a really bad system to get rid of spam, so blogs that don't reach those numbers aren't featured on search. Do that and feel free to unfollow, unlike and delete all the posts later, you'll still be greenlit

2. Draw popular stuff. Steven Universe, Granblue, boatgirls, whatever cartoons are popular right now. Even if you don't like the theme that much, building a following by sucking dick is the best way to get random followers and then possible reblogs later on

3. Tag your shit. The first five tags are the most important because those determine if you'll show up on search later, so the first five should be the stuff people would search for like hentai, etc. The rest should be #nsfw (so tumblr police doesn't bust you), #myart and whatever else you need

4. Always tag your art and leave a link to the tag on the sidebar so people can always find your art with one click

5. On HF: follow artists you like and drop a comment on their pics to get noticed

It's all about supply and demand.

A lot of the artists ITT can list half a dozen "pro" artists they will never ever be half as good as even if they spend their lives just drawing. These are the same artists (ITT) that I would probably never be as good as if I spent my entire life just drawing. Art has never been so popular to make. It's not just a handful of sometimes-starving artists like in the old days, artists are everywhere, and not all of them are starving, even. The human capacity for artistic expression is in the middle of an amazing multimedia Renaissance due to the excessive wealth we live in. (I know, I know, muh hard times, muh Bernie Sanders, but trust me, things are incredibly good from a historical perspective)

Now there isn't enough business to go around for all of these artists, even though they're very talented, because...a lot of other people are also talented and love to do the art. With a little searching I could probably get a Michelangelo-tier original oil painting of [my oddly specific fetish] for a few hundred. That's not an exaggeration, either...Michelangelo was great, especially for his time, but some of his anatomy wasn't even quite right in some of his paintings. So even though it's something most people can't do decently, people who can do it tend to really like it and want to do it, so supply outweighs even increased demand.

That's drawfags, who can make a viable career. Writefags? I.E. people who aren't/can't get published? Check out all of those billions of fanfic and original short story sites, contests, leagues, etc. I mean, check out NaNoWriMo. Some of the writing you'll find is godwful, but a decent minority of writing online is actually good, interesting, talented, maybe even original.

Most people, however, can write. Sometimes it's shit but not as bad as when people try to draw. Writing is "easier", and imagination is better than most writing.

Looking for advice from other artists, I'm looking into opening up for commissions but I don't feel I'm getting enough traffic to warrant it. I have 57 followers, I average 1 note on each picture, and I upload daily.

I've done a few unsuccessful gift arts to better established artists that didn't get attention, and I try to pander to shows and games that I am interested in too, (Overwatch and the like).

Any suggestions?

Pander to lots of fandoms, not just the ones you like personally, which I know is kind of hard if you don't like the fandom but it helps.
Also going into drawthreads helps a lot, /co/ and lots of other boards have them.
Also having a Hentai Foundry or spreading your feelers around in general helps a lot, it's mostly just about getting your name out there. If you're ever up for an art trade I'd be down to do one with you!

I tried Hentai Foundry but the Quality Control there is a real assblast. Waiting a week for a reply only to go "nah anatomy" I might try again with what I deem my better artworks.

Here's a question for the artists here. If a commissioner bought a lineart from you, then later down the line wanted it colored and shaded, what would you charge? The difference between the tiers, a reduced price of some sort, or something else entirely?

Most official characters have a "Model Sheet" that provides views of a character from every angle. Including any sort of outfit, pose, or style design can help, as well. If you are asking for a Donut and don't have a model sheet, that's something you can always commission ;^)

Second, it depends on the art and progression. I usually discount panels if they are just head shots or can reuse certain bases. It's definitely on a case-by-case basis.

It's understandable if it's just being busy in life or even forgetting about a particular transaction to be done, but If it's more like they've changed their mind about interest or something similar, something conclusive through messaging would be preferred over an endless silence.
