People often ask about making money in these threads. They usually disappear, presumably to spend time rolling around in heaps of hundred dollar bills. Also, a lot of people point out how easy it is to make porn, but I guess they don't post anything because they're worried about showing up the crap artists who do post.

Making porn isn't easy.
Making loops is incredibly easy, which is what most SFM content is.

Your average 5 minute porn animation will have around 7200 frames in it.
Where a loop will generally have between 24-120.
I could make a decent quality loop in an afternoon, but a longer animation could take literally months depending on the length.

I have a pretty large amount of respect for porn animators that make animations longer than 1-2 minutes, that aren't just 2-3 loops stitched together.

So pretty much with a few notable exceptions, the SFM porn community is lazy as fuck. It's still one of the best, but it's lazy as fuck.

This is my first attempt at SFM lewding

I haven't figured out hair, facial stuff, camera stuff and lighting, but it's pretty fun. If you have any tips or pointers, you're welcome.

Hair bones are either in their own category, or under the Unknown tab. Right-click the animation set editor and hit "show hidden controls" to see the Unknown tab. I only move the hair around when there's clipping, since a lot of newer models have gravity-reactive jiggleboned hair. If they don't have that, animating the hair that the viewer sees can make the animation that much better.

Also, the biggest tip I could give is to offset everything. Almost nothing should be perfectly in sync. I typically offset spine movements by 3 -6 frames each, depending on how fast the animation is. Everything is a lot more fluid that way.

Also, if you're going for a more realistic approach, either use reference or mime stuff out to see how bodies move.

A lot of models have face flexes to make good facial expression easier, but you have to mess with the sliders to get what you want. You can also finely tune the face using the face bones themselves, either under the Face tab or in Unknown.

Some people only use face bones, but it's whatever's better for you.

It might be easier to do it with regular post-processing, but it's possible to do some of it in SFM itself. I know there's a lens flare model on SFMLab and there are settings for DoF and blur.

Also, render as an image sequence and compile it in a video editing program like Vegas. Image sequence is the only one that doesn't fuck up the lighting in my experience.

There is no lens flare effect in SFM. For static shots, you can use a partially transparent material overlay. For moving shots, you could try item 1281 on sfmlab.

To get brighter renders in SFM itself, choose h.264 in render options. Uncompressed AVI gives more faithful colors. If you're fussy, you're going to need to post-process with other software.

Your animation is distorted by a large field-of-view. Reduce your field-of-view or use a larger lens preset. Use camera movement sparingly.

Also, you need Quicktime installed for the h.264 renders.

Remember that you can't see the full render quality with the work camera. You have to be in Clip Editor with the scene camera selected to see the effect of focus, ambient occlusion and lights with radius.

Minimum camera settings in element viewer should be depthoffieldquality 4 and motionblurquality 2. These are equivalent to render overrides of 128 and 32 samples respectively.

For simple loops, you can use ffmpeg to convert an image sequence to a video format or gimp to make a gif. ffmpeg also allows you to cut out beginning-of-render problems associated with flex settling and volumetric lighting.

There's too many people who've done a course on CGI who are pretty incapable, but love to hate SFM because they've seen a few actually talented people laugh at it. If you moved every animator from SFM to something better, you'd get 10% of the porn, most of the results would look no better, but some would look great.

If someone with Ellowas's talent used SFM, they'd have made a movie by now, not just a few pretty loops.

I'm not saying that Blender doesn't have advantages. The hair is much nicer than SFM, but how much does that add to its value as porn, or even an animation. As for lighting, SFM is mostly just as good as Blender if you take care with proper use of radius, shadowfiltersize and volumetrics.

You know all those nasty little edges in SFM? SFM can actually smooth those out for models using four-sided polygons compiled with $subd, but such models don't seem to exist. Hair shadows seem to be a problem because of how SFM uses alpha.

SFM looks cruder, but Blender looks like sex toys in action.

The final outcome of the render has near nothing to do with the program used.
It has everything to do with what render engine/lighting setup you're using, which CAN be program related, but comparing "blender renders" to "maya renders" is fucking stupid.

SFM is very limited when it comes to lighting/engines, but most modern 3d software can use a wide variety of engines.
Models don't magically change their look when they're ported to different programs, unless it's something niche and limited like SFM or MMD.

MDLDecompile > Import .QC file > Setup textures.
Done.

The only issue you'll run into is if the .mdl was compiled using .dmx format, in which case none of the flexes will work correctly.

Other then that, it's a really simple 5 minute process.

I am not sure if MDLDecompile gives you a .vta file, but if you use Crowbar you can just import it into blender along with the .smd it spits out.
Crowbar should always give you a .smd, a .vta, and a .qc. I think there's an option for .dmx as well somewhere, but I'm not sure when you'd use that.
Importing the .vta after the .smd will load up all the flexes and work 99% perfectly. A few (1-2) verts may possibly not animate correctly every few flexes, but it's fairly easy to fix one or two broken points.

I'd actually say SFM is the most shit tier 3D software if you're going to be one of the purist NEETs like on /3/.

Blender is okay software, it just has the most autistic user base and the shittiest UI.

Daz is good.It recently added Iray and Iray is a great render engine. But it's render and animation software only and doesn't have modelling built in (although it will bridge to some other modelling software like Hexagon and ZBrush). Some Daz users make their own models but a lot of them just buy their models or download free ones. 99% of the still 3D porn you see on the internet is done in Daz or Poser. For this reason alone it's often hated.

SFM is just ripped low poly game models, unsubdivided which is why they look jaggy as shit. It's also why the weight mapping tends to be pretty bad because they're game rigs using general weights instead of weight mapping that is independent along each axis of movement.

SFM gets a lot of NEET /3/ hate because it is literally the "I have no idea about anything 3D related but look what I can make" level of easy.

Blender fags and Maya fags probably hate each other the most, then all other software second. Blender fags are probably universally hated by anyone who isn't a blender fag. In weeaboo terms they're the type of weeb that constantly tells everyone else their waifu is shit-waifu and only their waifu has true waifu essence of purity.

Most people just use it for stills since you need a lot of plugins to animate properly. I don't think I've seen any animations made in Daz Studio that weren't just demonstrating the plugins. If people are actually making animations with it I'd be surprised. Although it was used to make the animatics for Civil War, but I don't think animatics really count as animation. Blender has the worst UI of any 3D software. But it's free.

There is a price to pay for it. If you get used to the way Blender wants you to do things you will find it almost impossible to learn to use any other software. Blender goes out of its way to assert it's uniqueness.

Modo, Silo, 3DCoat, 3D Max, Maya, they all have different interfaces but there's enough similarities between then that if you're learned one and gotten very good at it, you'll be able to learn the others just by playing around with the software and maybe a tutorial or two.

Learn to do things the Blender way and you've cast your lot in life. You'll be a Blender fag for the rest of your days and the thought of using any other software will fill you with dread. You'll be so scared of other software that you'll actually fear each update of Blender because they might have changed something to make it easier to learn.

The most fervent critics of SFM are simply snobs who've learnt a little about CGI, but not enough to make anything themselves. Yes, SFM is shit, but I believe that if you were to take an animator familiar with other software and ask them to do a piece in SFM and a similar piece in Blender, say, then the results wouldn't be that much different.

I've actually seen people in these threads criticize SFM for being too easy to use, which is astonishing. I think it's a good thing that I don't need to have a separate render machine sat chugging away for a week to make a six-second loop; with SFM it's feasible to actually make a movie.

Look at this work done in Blender. It has decent animation, and the model is a bit nicer looking than the equivalent SFM would look.

Now, look at the hair clipping. I'm pretty sure that the animator noticed this after it was rendered, but Blender rendering is so slow that it wasn't worth correcting.

Look at the background. Most of his stuff has no background, but he's put in a nice background for this. The trouble is that the lighting is so simplistic that it's difficult to see the difference between walls and floor, and there's very little sense of depth. I don't blame the animator, I suspect that adding such things in Blender would be prohibitive in terms of render time.
