Speaking from experience, I've found that Fetlife is best when you are already 'initiated'. You can use it to find munches, and research the kinks you're actually into. But keep in mind that it is first, and foremost, a social networking site. Use it to keep in touch with those you know in the kink scene, don't use it to cultivate new ones.

The same can kind of be said with munches. I tried going to a few back in college (I'm in Boston). For the curious, munches are basically when all the kinksters who know one another rent out the back/private room of a pub and just hang out with drinks and dinner - and post an open invite to others who may be curious.

For context, I'm young, and a male switch. Those two things can attract extra attention. I let these facts slip at the first munch I went to, and ended up with two different dommes not wanting to take 'I'm just looking' for an answer. Didn't go back to that one. The second one I went to, I kept my preferences to myself and mostly observed. Still wasn't impressed, but that was on me - just didn't 'click' with anyone I did talk with.

Since then, I've been lucky enough to make friends who are kinksters - outside of the context of kink - and I'm now dating another switch. I got lucky in this case, but if you can get similarly 'initiated', I would recommend it. Try your local punk, arts, and circus scenes. Climbing sometimes too (bondage specific).

Just in my observations, in terms of 'population' of my local community:

Back in college, I had a platonic friend who was curious about duct tape, and I already had some experience in these things - a couple rope bottoms/kink-buddies - and she knew this. Being serious, its kind of tricky giving too-specific of advice. Every munch, and every community is going to be different - and so are the way people approach different social situations.
