CGs need to feel like a reward. Sprites can be used for build up and to set the scene, but the scene itself should usually be CG, otherwise you just get Witch Trainer all over again. Sprites/chibis aren't really rewarding by themselves, but their comparatively cheaper nature makes them great for setting up for a scene, especially if you have it set up to where you can strip off clothes and just generally "tease" for the scene that's coming up.

But CGs always need to sit at the high points of a given scene, and if you can't get CGs for every impactful scene, it might be indicative that you've got more on your plate than you can work with. It's usually better to scale back and keep content high-quality than just have lots and lots of mediocre content. But you need low points to complement your high points. You need to know when to give your audience blue balls to build to a climax versus teasing them for so long that they just go numb and limp.

I tried to make one with RPGmaker VXace but I hated how limited the art assets could be. In order to do animation (which was a must for me) you either needed to have a script that would load each image in a row and remove a previous image, which could be a strain on the resources, or used a OGG Theora which is the most shitty of video files.

Let alone how small the window size was, or how much I had to scrounge scripts or maneuver my way around the works just so I can get rid of the shitty RPGmaker look and make it a 2D side scroller.

I'm not saying they should work for free. Their work starts when you're willing and able to pay them. I'm saying you should line them up, get a tacit agreement on their part that they WILL work for you when they get paid. Get some examples of their work you can show around so people can see what they might bring to the project.

Then you put clear goals on your Patreon, "hit X amount, we add Y scene." Once that amount is hit, you have your money, you pay your artist, your artist does the work, the game is better for it, the patrons are happy. After the first goal is hit, either change the conditions of the goal to cover the next scene, or whatever, keep the ball rolling.

This was the last concept art I saved from my failed hard-drive (and the last I can show without getting some ban or something.). Something like this, but the smaller UI, problem was I could never learn ruby scripting for VXace to learn how to do. Mind you I touched just about every single game engine, from Unity to Ren'py, to a adventure game maker and flash.
