Why do y'all gotta pull this shit every thread? The definition for "xeno" is so fucking broad; it includes everything from colored humans to hideous lovecraftian horrors. Of course there's gonna be a wide variety of different tastes when it comes to this stuff. Do you really expect to go into one of these threads and expect that you're gonna like every single thing that's posted? Just post the shit you like and let other people post the shit they like, it's not really that hard.

Perspective bias. They're on the side of good, while the evil side consists of humans, which some people find so offensive and outrageous that they describe it as badly as possible to make them look bad and themselves look like edgy heroes, heedless of the facts that the human bad guys don't actually have any good points or that there are other humans who aren't as bad as them. Try and count the number of times the Na'vi are called "perfect" by their bashers.
>>
>>1712036

For what it's worth, they're just talking about that one particular alien. Other colored humans like the Asari or Tyr'ahnee don't get much hate. It mostly stems from the fact that Avatar was shit.

>>1712320
I think what upsets a lot of people is how poorly mediocre the movie is compared to what it should have been. James Cameron had access to more money than pretty much any director and he comes out with Dances with Wolves in space. It could have been a very interested movie but alas it's all flash and no substance.
>>
>>1712333
Most of the hate for them in this general stems from the annoying fag who waifus them and shoves it in everyone's face each thread while being a fag. The movie of course was still shitty and uninteresting along with the unappealing blue indian shitters.

I wanted to make them a little bit alien but was too afraid to venture far from the norm.
>>
>>1712333
I think that what really upsets a lot of people isn't that it lacks substance, but that it has substance that offends them. Most of the hate is directed at (what they claim is) the movie's plot, which is really just a reversal of the standard alien invasion story; most of those are even more simplistically black and white with their morals, but they don't get nearly as much flak for playing the heroes as a morally perfect superior race (which many of the complainers praise when it happens to humans) or for portraying the villains as a one-dimensional monolithically evil race (which they tend to actually do, unlike Avater).
>>
>>1712354

I disagree. I think more than that is the holier than though preachy attitude the movie has. For me, one of my least favorite morals in media is "Hurr technology bad shitting in the woods good" which is exactly what the movie had with the industrialized, space faring humans as the evil ones and the utterly primitive na'vi as the good guys. It's made all the worse with how heavily the film relies on technology. Literally no part was filmed in a rain forrest.

If the film's colonialist were in more of an alien India and Jake Sully had some sort of Lawrence of Arabia thing going on, I think people would have liked it more. The hypocrisy on top of the shit morality is a turn off. At least for me.

Like I get it's an environmental movie but they went way overboard with the gap between the technology of heroes and villains.

>but they don't get nearly as much flak for playing the heroes as a morally perfect superior race (which many of the complainers praise when it happens to humans)

There's no real way to verify this but if it's true, maybe it's because the movies with humans as the heroes aren't worth getting upset about. Independence Day is about the most "Humanity fuck yeah" movie there is and everyone thinks it's just some dumb big budget hollywood explosion movie. Meanwhile Avatar is treated with a little bit more respect from audiences and critics alike.

So you were offended by the movie because it reminded you of an old strawman argument and you projected that over what the movie was actually saying, resulting in nonsense like "it was made by humans using technology so it's hypocritical". If the movie is against anything, it's against recklessly destroying the environment or exploiting the less powerful for a profit.

Avatar is far from the only work to have environmentalist themes, and far from the only work to be attacked and strawmanned for them. It's just one of the more recent victims of latent edgy outrage that had been floating around human culture for decades.

>Independence Day
That's a good point to bring up, because its bad guys are pretty much exactly what people falsely claim Avatar's bad guys are. They destroyed their environment and they want to steal the Earth's resources for their own use, and they are rightfully treated as villains for it. And unlike Avatar, they're an actual one-dimensional monolithic force who are treated as universally bad with no good points. But you don't get hordes of people calling humanity Perfect Mary Sue Pinkskins or cheering for the White House's destruction, because the bad guys aren't called "human" so they don't take it personally.
>>
>>1712447
>So you were offended by the movie because it reminded you of an old strawman argument and you projected that over what the movie was actually saying,

You're simply declaring that it's a strawman projection without any real basis. In all irony, you're the one strawmanning right now.

> If the movie is against anything, it's against recklessly destroying the environment or exploiting the less powerful for a profit.

Which Cameron has already done with Aliens and it's considered one of the best sci fi movies of all time. Why is one near universally praised but the other incredibly controversial? Could it possibly be Cameron handled the subject poorly in Avatar?

>Avatar is far from the only work to have environmentalist themes, and far from the only work to be attacked and strawmanned for them. It's just one of the more recent victims of latent edgy outrage that had been floating around human culture for decades.

Keep wanking yourself off there.

> But you don't get hordes of people calling humanity Perfect Mary Sue Pinkskins or cheering for the White House's destruction, because the bad guys aren't called "human" so they don't take it personally.

You do know there's other movies where humans are portrayed in a negative light where people aren't upset by the fact, right?

>>
>>1712457

>>
>>1712452
>You're simply declaring that it's a strawman projection without any real basis.
The basis is that you claim the movie says something that it doesn't, and are attacking it for that.

>Which Cameron has already done with Aliens and it's considered one of the best sci fi movies of all time. Why is one near universally praised but the other incredibly controversial? Could it possibly be Cameron handled the subject poorly in Avatar?
It could be that the audience handled the subject poorly, because of pre-existing hatred of environmentalist themes which made them prone to disingeniously misinterpreting its message.

>>1712458
I'm only going by what the posters in this thread were saying when they started bashing Avatar without provocation, along with everyone who doesn't hate it. They claim the movie mindlessly hates and demonizes humans when it clearly shows humans acting like human beings and disagreeing on how to handle the situation. They claim the movie mindlessly hates and demonizes technology when it's clearly about reckless exploitation specifically. They claim that the na'vi are portrayed as disgustingly, offensively perfect, when they're mostly portrayed as heroic underdogs who are not immune to their own mistakes but should still be treated as people.
>>
>>1712468
>The basis is that you claim the movie says something that it doesn't, and are attacking it for tha

Except it's one of the things it actually is saying. You're just denying it because you don't like that fact.

>It could be that the audience handled the subject poorly, because of pre-existing hatred of environmentalist themes which made them prone to disingeniously misinterpreting its message.

Except people aren't as averse to environmental themes as you'd think. It's simply that the movie handled it poorly. Once again you're making assumptions about all of these people and how they think.

>They claim the movie mindlessly hates and demonizes humans when it clearly shows humans acting like human beings and disagreeing on how to handle the situation. They claim the movie mindlessly hates and demonizes technology when it's clearly about reckless exploitation specifically

That's your interpretation and it's fine, but remember it's only your interpretation. Your single analysis of the movie isn't law.

>>1712476
In which exact scene or dialogue line does the movie mindlessly dismiss all technology as evil, rather than being against the reckless destruction of nature?
>>
>>1712489
That's like asking what scene in Starship Troopers did they specifically say they were making fun of the source material. The entire film is that mate.

>>1712483
Fine. This will be the last I say on the subject.
>>
>>1712490
The entire film is pro-nature, pro-science, and anti-reckless profit-mongering, not mindlessly anti-technology or anti-humanity. People project those points on the movie, as they do with many other fictional works with similar themes, for reasons which are easy to guess.

>>1712483
I'm just tired of people going on unprovoked rants about how much they hate the movie for saying things it doesn't. Posting alien porn in the alien porn thread doesn't count as provocation, but it causes them to complain anyway.

>They claim the movie mindlessly hates and demonizes humans when it clearly shows humans acting like human beings and disagreeing on how to handle the situation
>human

You mean one dimensional characters that fall under;

1) white boy that has a change of heart and becomes the savior of a proud and independent race of people
2) Jelly of Jake xenobiologist that sides with Na'vi
3) Business man who ultimately doesn't care about anything but the bottom line (to be fair he tries to avoid causalities but hell 'they're stupid savages in a tree')
4) Army commander who wants to kill things/kill the indigenous 'that's how you scatter the roaches'
5) Control panel scientist
6) Tomboy Hello copter pilot
7) Damaged 'my way of life is better than yours ' love interest
8) Alien chief
9) Alien chief wife
10) Asshole to-be-alien-chief that only 'likes' the main character after he tames a dragon without getting to know him as a person but then says 'we were brothers' when he dies as though they had a bond
11) Smoker scientist who likes Pandora and Na'vi more than her own kind so she's automatically right about everything

There's a reason that people don't remember their names very well.

Also
>when it clearly shows humans acting like human beings and disagreeing on how to handle the situation

Just because characters disagree on how to handle a situation doesn't make them more humanlike or better characters. Fact of the matter is the movie was more interested in showing the alien planet than actual diplomacy or anything more intricate and complicated than Fern Gully.

>They claim that the na'vi are portrayed as disgustingly, offensively perfect, when they're mostly portrayed as heroic underdogs who are not immune to their own mistakes but should still be treated as people
>not immune to their own mistakes
>mistakes

What mistakes? If anything they're justified about everything that comes out of their mouths in a plot and lore sense.

>most of the hate is directed at (what they claim is) the movie's plot, which is really just a reversal of the standard alien invasion story

Problem is it doesn't feel like a subversion or reversal of the alien invasion story. As I've said in my other post, the movie is so focused on showing us Pandora that there's barely any time given to fleshing out the Na'vi other than Neyteri. They don't really have an identity that can be described as anything other than 'basically Native American and African'. It puts the environment ahead of the 'us versus them' conflict that most alien invasion stories are about. And if anything Pandora isn't all that creative of an alien world. It's basically an earth rainforest/jungle with minor curiosities with the tribal humans repainted into cats that can stick nerve endings into animals. It's not even about Na'vi vs sky people. It's about 'humans fuck shit up in the environment'.

I hate this in movies in general. Just once I'd like the villain to actually quickly try to kill the hero. Even if someone still manages to stop the villain, it would be nice to see them actually try without a shitty monologue or one liner or trying to torture the hero and waste time.

I've been thinking about this and come up with two in universe explanations

>one group posts alien porn in the alien porn thread
>the other group angrily spams it in response to people posting alien porn in the alien porn thread
>>
I mostly want to corrupt the Na'vi with Terran culture, specifically the metal and punk rock scenes.
>>
>>1714432
>Earth dies
>some humans board the last spaceships carrying with them as much of information they can
>eventually lands on Pandora
>constructs a colony somewhere it won't needlessly disturb the environment/be much harder to expand from
>don't alienate the na'vi but try to keep a dialog with the closest clans while building up a infrastructure
>Since the humans would still have all the avatar technology they can make avatars, and maybe even have avatars breeding with each other to create a group that are well suited for the environment
>eventually the stories about the human colony would spread to most na'vi clans and some na'vi are curious enough to seek it out
>this and some na'vi falling in love with the avatars and humans leads to a small but growing na'vi community
>these na'vi adopt some things from human culture leading to na'vi children going to human schools and wearing human clothing while still worshiping Eywa and speaking na'vi
>>
>>1714489
so in the end a combined human/na'vi society springs up and thrives thanks to that the different strengths of the two species work well together.
Even though it's not corruption (or that depends on how you look at it I suppose) some na'vi get very influenced by human culture and mixes it with their own.
>>
>>1713641
It's also important to remember that the entire reason Jake was brought along on the mission was to engage in diplomacy with the natives to secure the resource. A mission that he ignored entirely in favor of chasing pussy. All of that bloodshed could potentially have been avoided if he would have done his job instead of hooking up with the chief's daughter.

They had other avatar bodies too. Signory Weaver's character had one and had a much better grasp on na'vi culture and language. Was it ever mentioned why Jake was so integral to it?

Like I get not wanting to waste no doubt billions of dollars in mind uploading alien body recreating technology but they really jumped the gun with having Jake run out in the wild like that. I haven't seen the film in a while so I'm not sure how much they told him about the wild life or if they gave him any tools.
>>
>>1714243
Unobtanium is actually a term used to describe really hard to quire metal/elements/whatever.

But if that crap is powering Earth's technology, you'd think they'd give it a name. It's basically space coal.
>>
>>1714583
He was chosen due to literal divine intervention, Neytiri was going to shoot him until a atokirina landed on her arrowhead.
She saw this as a sign and rescued him and took him to her clan. And they in turn let him stay to see if he could learn about their way of life (and in the script so they could learn about humans).
Also the RDA isn't interested in diplomacy, they want Jake to tell them how the tree in built so they can destroy it easier

>>1714598
Not the same guy, but I'm wondering why Jake in particular was chosen for this divine intervention. Why traits did he have that made Eywa go "Yep, better let him live, he'll bring peace and harmony to them all". As the last guy said, wouldn't Sigorny's character be a better choice? She understood their culture a lot more, making her a better mediator. Unless Jake cared about the Na'vi more than Sigorny, who'd been living with them for several years.
Then again, I've only seen the movie once, when it first came out, so I might be missing something.
>>
>>1714802
Meant to say "Unless Jake cared about the Na'vi more than Sigorny, who'd been living with them for several years, which is just ridiculous."
>>
>>1714802
The na'vi take interest in that Jake is a soldier since they've never talked to one before. Of course Eywa shouldn't know this until Jake connects with the tree of voices so that can't be the reason he's saved (unless Eywa works in some way not explained in the movie).
Maybe it saw that he was isolated and alone and therefor vulnerable and decided it was worth to try and show him the na'vi life.
Neytiri also says she saved him because he had a "strong heart, no fear" but I'm not sure what exactly that's supposed to mean.

I agree that Grace would have been much more suited as a mediator (if the RDA was actually interested in diplomacy). She's not welcome however since RDA soldiers shot some na'vi kids at her school. But Jake actually convinces the clan leader to let her visit and she's well liked.

A white-haired Neytiri because why not?
>>
>>1714831
>She's not welcome however since RDA soldiers shot some na'vi kids at her school.
If the whole shooting incident was why she couldn't be a mediator, why wasn't she divinely chosen before then? Several years of contact and diplomacy happened before Jake showed up, so why didn't any intervention take place then?

>Maybe it saw that he was isolated and alone and therefor vulnerable and decided it was worth to try and show him the na'vi life.
Maybe he wasn't chosen to lead them to peace, but just because Eywa showed mercy, and this whole messiah, lead them to peace thing happened by complete accident?

But then again, Jake never really led the Na'vi to peace at all. Tensions escalated to full blown war, which the Na'vi then won after being led to battle by ... Jake. Wait, maybe we're looking at this all wrong? Maybe Eywa wasn't looking for a mediator, knowing peace wouldn't happen, and was looking for a warrior to allow the Na'vi to stand their ground? Explains why he, and not Grace wasn't chosen. If the story was about building peace between differing cultures, it wouldn't have ended in a climatic battle scene, but a treaty signing scene. Which isn't nearly as exciting.
>>
>>1714851
>Wait, maybe we're looking at this all wrong? Maybe Eywa wasn't looking for a mediator, knowing peace wouldn't happen, and was looking for a warrior to allow the Na'vi to stand their ground?

I think this is a fair assumption. The only problem is how Eywa knew he was a warrior, but Eywa isn't well understood even in universe

The best way to solve it is for people to calm the fuck down and accept that /aco/ is for porn, if people want to discuss avatar there's /tv/, if people want to discuss halo or mass effect they'll go to /v/.

I've always thought the reason why Jake was chosen was because Eywa saw through the eyes of the animals that he encountered in the beginning. (running away from that Thanator and running towards the Hammerhead things) Seeing that this more physically fit guy and more likely to survive in the wild he'd probably be more able and willing to fit in with the culture etc etc
After all Eywa sends animals to mow down the marines in the end of the movie.

That being said it would be tremendously more interesting if Norm (wimpy scientist) or Dr. Augustine (Sigorny Weaver character) were the people/person who was chosen as this story could have been a lot more complex. Imagine the conversations and concepts smarter characters could have brought to the table if they were the ones in the main character's position. Heck considering their personalities they would have probably spent more time talking with other Na'vi characters which would mean getting to know the Na'vi as individual people rather than tribal cardboard cut outs.

there is this concept in simple people of highly educated people being somehow removed from universal understanding. they are "book smart" but don't have "common sense", or they "think with their heads, not with their hearts."

the thing with Jake is that he bridged that gap. he was a smart, strategic person, but still deeply empathetic, humble, and open to learning whatever from whoever. He was a human, but he still had a lot of heart.

Remember, the scientists were on good terms with the Navi people. they just weren't quite on the same level of openness to warrant the attention of the elders.

the Na'vi are touchy feely people. the scientists are too intellectual, and not enough touchy feely. the human miners and soldiers are very feely, but are also racist assholes
>>
>>1714851
what? Jake totally lead them to peace. when you are a forest creature, you get used to the idea of things trying to kill you, and needing to kill to survive. there is a balance, with this. you kill only when you need to, and when you are killed, you can assume that its fine, because that creature needed to kill you.

this is why Neyteri sought Jake out, after watching him bumble around in the forest. She was probably attracted to him, but his wanton killing of whatever animals came near him pissed her off. He wasn't working within the balance, and she intervened to keep him from killing more animals.

Eywa would have sought this same balance between the miners and its people. It would have understood that killing miners was necessary to return the situation to balance, with them taking what they need, while also allowing the other creatures in the world to have what they need.

imagine the miners as a plague of locusts. having a few grasshoppers is essential for the balance of nature. having a swarm of millions would destroy everything. you would starve, everyone else would starve, and eventually they would starve, too. so you have to kill them down to manageable numbers. same with the miners. if violence was necessary to bring them in line with the balance, then that's fine

The mining company can get their hands on WMDs by being the last hope of humanity's survival. If the neocpnservatives would wage war in Iraq to secure the oil rights in the region, you can bet a government supported genocide of the Na'vi would not be a foregone conclusion if mankind was at stake.
>>
>>1717444
would be a foregone conclusion*
>>
>>1717444
Nobody would nuke a garden world since they most likely would have use for it. And nobody wants to be the guy responsible for genociding the only known sapient alien species. Especially when they pose no threat to Earth or humans.
Unubtanium is not essential to Earths survival or it would obviously not be mined by some corporation without any oversight and sold for profit.

I want nothing but cute xenos being posted, but I feel compelled to respond to people throwing around ridiculous terms and accusations.
In fact perhaps it would be simpler to compile a document with the more common arguments and counter-arguments that could be refereed to instead of posting the same counter-arguments over and over again and instead focus on posting xenos

>How would a mining company get hundreds of WMDs?

They have remote control bodies worth billions of dollars. Nukes wouldn't be that hard to buy/pay a corrupt government for. I'm sure bombs that could be made in the 40's-50's would be enough to solve their problems so that'd automatically make the prospect that much cheaper for a civilization with FTL travel and interstellar travel.

Just do a nuke or two and I think the natives would be smart enough to leave you alone.

I'd say they're kinda like the Na'vi which, as you can see in this thread, don't really go over well here because they aren't 'alien in anatomy' enough. So it'd probably be best to avoid starting another flame war here.

wraith is fun but she's a real glass cannon if you try to get aggressive with her, and difficult to win with once the hunters catch wind of your tricks too. I wish that Evolve wasnt such a shit game so i could spend all day playing with my waifu and enjoying that booty.

Fucking retarded that people still treat Eywa as a sapient person rather than a network of neuro-chemical connections that the Na'avi use to store and transfer data. They pretty much spell it out in the film. Notice that the Ace Venture ending happens because the Na'avi are praying; ie. interfacing with the planetary system to call for help, which comes in the form of a massive singular, hostile wildlife attack on humans. Didn't happen any other time. But no, just buy into the primitives' bullshit, why don't you?
