I agree that the west is a lot better than it used to be, but a lot of the changes have only happened really recently, like in the past 10 years maybe. I think probably around 20% of out gay people over 30 will have had a family member disown them in some way. And, even now, you'd be surprised. I live in London - maybe after SF and NYC the friendliest place in the world to gays - and I still get street tuts and spits about once a week for holding hands with my BF and have been physically attacked by drunk homophobes.
