I'm not sure about you, but if my end goal is to attempt to get an art piece that looks like the character I already have, and edited reference photo will get the character look across more accurately than a description or a poor drawing in MS paint.

Have you ever heard of adoptables? Some people don't want to act as armchair Tolkien. Some people just like to have something made for them that's interesting. Some people like seeing what an artist will do with an idea, and being the person who vaguely inspired it is enough.
