>>
how do clients feel about range depending on complexity-or do they prefer one set price for something?
like say a price is usually X.
would they prefer it staying at X no matter what or a range like (X-10)though (X+10).
would it even matter to them generally?

what about discount sale events?
>>
>>1444936
I think set prices make people more confident on something and make it easier to decide what they want to go for, whereas "ranges depending on complexity" might make people second-guess on whether their idea is constituted as "complex" or not, and might make them reconsider the idea of commissioning.

That said, it's up to you in the end what you'd want to do.

As for sale events, I'm pretty sure everybody loves those when they're around. Except maybe beleaguered artists who get more business than expected from a good sale.
>>
>>1444994
The more skilled the artist becomes the more he has to specify the complexity in order to save time and effort.

So is there any artist on here that would consider taking commissions for Steam games? Because FUCK I just realized I have a boatload that I never cashed in from old Humble Bundles.

It would depend on the artist and on the games. I would suggest making a list of what you have available, and if an artist sees a title they like they can offer something for it.

The artist I did that with a while back is the only one so far to have scammed me, so unless you just feel like giving games away for nothing, seems like there'd be a greater risk.

Speaking of Humble Bundles, that Sonic one is looking pretty tempting right now...Can't wait for Sonic Mania.

the phrase I'm looking for here is that you "reserve the right to refuse a commission on the grounds of artistic integrity"
and yeah that is kind of dumb, but if that's how you feel, be honest about it. pretending you're okay with it won't make your art better

Alright, alright, I added price examples
but I put goddamn question marks after them because I don't fucking know. It's not as if anyone's ever going to commission robots or monsters or pixel art from me. I'd just.. like them to.
>>
>>1447118
How much would that discount be? On the monsters part. Looking to get something of my character getting fucked by a werewolf, but not much money here.
>>
>>1447177
If one of the characters is a monster I'll knock the price of the extra character off.
So the prices up on the sheet are what you'd be paying, no extra character fee!
>>

Something I thought up last night while letting my mind wander, a question towards some of the artists here.

Say a person wanted to make a fairly sizable picture with a good number of characters around a certain backdrop. For the sake of the example, let's say a typical hot springs picture with a number of waifus from different media all together, like pic related but without convenient censoring.

Would it be possible to do the idea in stages, over a course of payments for each girl added to the picture? Like, I suppose, sketching out the background and a singular girl, paying for the cost of that, then later paying the price of adding another girl to the sketch, then another later on, and so on until all the girls are in position, and then paying the cost of turning the sketch to lineart, then to color?

Or would that be something that could only be done as "save up the 300+ dollars it would cost, then buy it as a lump sum" kind of thing?
>>
>>1447369
Yeah that's I mean, I wouldn't charge extra for the werewolf. It would still count as an extra character normally!
>>
>>1447708
I wouldn't mind doing something like that, because obviously, if you end up dropping it it's not really any skin off of my nose. Doing it one character at a time is a pretty nice way of doing it.
It means that I don't get fatigued with like, drawing 20 characters in one go.
>>
>>1447798
I see! So like, lineart would remain at £28, for example. What's the difference between Pinup and Scene? From your price list they seem pretty much the same thing.
>>
The whole "Pay what you want" thing kind of irks me. I feel like if I get the commission and pay to little then I feel like a Jackass. If I get the commission and pay a little to much then it feels like extra money leaving the bank.

I'd.rather just have a set amount for those things so that neither party feels like they've gotten the shorter stick. Artists, how do you feel about this?
>>
>>1447575
monsters can fuck! they can fuck robots if you want. That sounds painful though.
nah DA is just little kids who want to pay with "points" and I aint about to into tumblr
>>
>>1447708
situations like that, my main concern is "do you have some poses I can copy" because I can draw dozens of naked girls no problem, but I can't think of dozens of unique poses so they don't look like they're just sitting there.
>>1448074
There's something to the idea of "i like drawing this anyway, would you just toss me a few bucks?" and as far as worrying you've paid too much or too little, these things have a way of evening themselves out. but I never do pay what you want, I do "I respect haggling". you'll never get me to tell you to fuck off because you asked for a few bucks less. at worst I might say if I take it down below X it won't be worth my time anymore, but more likely I'll say "howbout if we leave out the background" or something.

Will/will not do?
>>
>>1448134
If I was to do that kind of thing, I'd try to map out characters and positions in my head at the very least, and make sure to describe actions. I'd want my group shot to be something more than just all of them sitting/laying around, even if it would probably be something otherwise simple.

One pouring a drink for another, some bonding, some fighting, some ogling or jealously squeezing breasts....the whole cliche hot springs deal realized with personal waifus.

honestly, times like that, i feel like it's better to make a purchase of goods, and then show them the receipt with their address on it. like buy me a Switch and we call it even. that's how I got my WiiU.. just in time for.. games to stop coming out for it almost entirely..

they dropped so many balls.
yeah if i cared about handhelds i'd be living pretty, gamewise.
anyway i did eventually get muh wiiu zelda so all is well. it's just... really crushing that A) we finally got a proper starfox followup, and a new paper mario, and they were both ehhh, and B) despite a console with a perfect pointer and a console with a ... screen-thingy, we never got a new pokemon snap. the president of pokemon said 'japanese people arent interested in photography' as if he was trying to dissuage the old japanese tourists with cameras cliche... which hasnt been relevant since smafones.

now back to commissions.
>>
What are the sorts of things artists tend to "give away" as patreon rewards?

And what would people actually want? If an artist gives away their art for free, what sort of extra thing could he do for patrons thats worth the money?
>>
>>1449402
Most I've seen have some Patreon-exclusive pictures, or if they're not going to be exclusive, are ones that are not going to be uploaded to the artist's other pages for a while.

Raffles used to be a thing, and polls to determine the subject of the next piece of monthly/weekly/whatever art are also things, people like to put in their influence and hope the next picture might basically be theirs.

Depending on the rates, at higher tiers artists will also offer a pic to each patron of that tier after they pay, so they're always guaranteed a monthly pin-up or similar of their own choosing, for their continued patronage.

So I don't know where else to vent about this but I'm done commissioning artists.

For the past fucking year I've been trying to get one fucking simple thing done. It's not complex, it's not a weird fetish. It's literally the most vanilla thing out there.

FOUR FUCKING ARTISTS have now ghosted me. They say they'll do it, they get me so hyped and excited, and then they just fucking ghost me. I never hear anything back, and they keep updating like nothing ever happened.

WHY??? What is it about me and my request that is so fucking impossible to do? All I'm asking is for a two characters interacting, holding hands or drinking or just being cute with each other. NOTHING that should warrant being ghosted like this. I'm friendly, I pay up front, I do whatever the artist asks. FOUR FUCKING TIMES.

It's the most insulting, upsetting thing and I'm fucking done. I'm done commissioning small artists. Big artists with names and reputations? Maybe, when I can afford it. But I'm done trying to stick up for the little guy and give lesser known artists business. I looked up to a lot of these people, man. One of them I've been in contact with for MONTHS. They KNOW how fucking excited I was to throw money at them. They said they'd do it, and now it's been days and not only are they taking new commissions again, I've never even gotten a response about if they've decided to just scrap mine.

I feel cheated. I feel like crying. If you don't think you'll do my commission, don't promise me that you will. Don't lead me alone like a stupid cow on a lead and then abandon me.

Fuck this. I'm done. I'm done supporting people. I'm done sitting around like a sad-sack waiting for people to do things for me that they never will. Forget it.
>>
>>1450881
Im really sorry that this happened to you but you should post their names those who do this deserve to be known so that nobody will get scammed.
>>
>>1450928
I'm not really comfortable with that. They're not scamming me so much as just leading me along and then catfishing me. No money has changed hands, so it's not technically illegal. It's just them going 'hell yeah i'll do this for sure, give me a day or two' and then just never doing it. It's a broken verbal promise, but it's a really shitty thing to do. It's fucking heartbreaking. I was looking forward to this new one for DAYS. I was so so so happy that I was finally getting this one done, and by this artist. Now they're just ignoring my messages and doing other things. It's probably stupid to be so upset about it but man... I really wanted to finally get this thing done.

Oh, maybe it's your email's spam filter then? four in a row sounds really odd. I can tell you that I'd never do that to anyone, but I would also appreciate a followup email if i forgot. I commissioned a plush from someone once and waited patiently and it turned out they forgot and if I had just reminded them, I would have gotten it sooner

This is literally what I've asked for every time:

My OC and an established character drinking and having a good time with a cute smooch thrown in there for good measure.

That's it. That is literally it.

I request the same on the OC drawthreads occasionally and have also gotten ghosted there, although I never expect anyone to do anything so it's not so bad then. It's just a bonus if it happens!
>>
>>1450881
>holding hands

>>
>>1450980

>>
>>1450964
I wonder how that happens? That's occasionally happened once or twice with me and a couple of my commissioners, one I've even had to send a basic message fairly soon after sending a message of reference/detail links just to make sure it passes through, since a couple times my details email goes into their spam folder.

I think once or twice an artist has send me something that hit my spam, but that's even rarer and hasn't happened in months now.
>>
>>1450977
I guess you've hit the jackshitpot 4 times in a row then...

I'd understand your disappointment, but since you said no money has changed hands, would you not try again?

I do know there are a lot of artists that would deliver..

Okay, but here's something you've never tried before: get someone in here to publically say they'll do it
now if they don't, you have witnesses.
I can understand if you're reluctant since it would kind of look like you just came up with this story in order to get people to draw your request, but because it was one of us that came up with the idea, then.. y'know, you can justify it.
>>
>>1451004
You can write the script then i will draw certain angles and stuff.
Also, you don't have to add certain panels on the script as it will ruin the momentum of each page, you can leave that to me.

If you wanna commission me,, send me an email and we'll talk about it there.

I left the length up to him. I asked for a sketch comic, nothing major, and told him to take his time. He assured me he'd be done the next day. >>1448727
>>
>>1452029
Ok first of all thanks for the comment! Any input really means a lot now.

What'd you think'd be a fair price then?

From what I see.. would it be reasonable to charge around $20 - 25 for a color sketch? $40+ for cellshade? A friend suggested $75 - 80+ for full painted - would that be an ok price?

I probably will keep these prices for a while (as a promotion of sorts) since I just properly opened my commission.. If anything I'm wondering that being new, putting a higher price would be detrimental since I don't have a steady following, big client list or track record yet?

Anyway, you can view my stuff here: https://ylvishcanisminora.tumblr.com/tagged/ylvish

I'm not entirely sure what would be a reasonable price - it depends on how long it takes you to make a picture. It's also true that keeping the prices low might help build a rep and an audience. In the end though, unhelpful as it sounds, you have to decide what's worth it for you.

I retrospect, /d/ has stuff like futa, tentacles, and /d/-tier fetishes which was a great deal of the reason why the board was made.

I'd have assumed that it would have its own commission thread too, but most artists there make money off patreon and don't do commissions because of it.

As much as Patreon is helping artists, going that route kinda kills off commission likelkness, so there is that too.
>>
>>1455434
see i've been trying to use patreon for commissions.. but i cant get figure out how
>>
To the buyers of this thread: how often do you commission?

To the sellers: how often are you receiving commissions?
>>
>>1455697
First time for me
>>
>>1455697
I usually commission as soon as a new inspiration comes to my boner. I splurged on Stardew Valley girls when I first played it four months ago, and now I'm commissioning lots of Mantis and Nebula lewds.
>>
>>1455697
it's irregular as hell. I tend to get them in close succession, oddly enough
>>
>>1455697
I'm straight up fucking addicted to commissioning, ever since getting my first one off of some of the people that come around here. Since then, I think there's barely been a week when I haven't been waiting on a commission, discussing details of one with an artist, or looking around for available or new ones to fill my personal folder.

Only reason at this point I'm not broke is that I'm trying to force myself to slow down, and I get help staying afloat by working a little on written smut commissions myself. Write porn, then buy porn.
>>
>>1455815
awesome. i bet you and an artist could work together to create illustrated porn that you write
>>
I want to ask a question to all people who commissions stuff.

How do you guys feel knowing that people in the /aco/ drawthread get free art and don't have to pay for nothing, while you have to pay?

Call me autistic but this is stopping me from commissioning artist, like why do you draw a 60$ pic for free but if i want something similar i have to pay you, imo its ridiculous.
>>
>>1455867
Generally i pay because i like the specific artists style or for our specific wants.
Draw-threads don't have to make the art you want or in the style you want also you can specifically alter from the sketch they deliver so you have more input into the art you pay for.
>>
>>1455829
It's something I've considered, but I've never really written something yet I feel like I'd want illustrated. Used to have pipe dreams of running quests or rps or whatever that would get artwork for certain pivotal moments, like the CGs in a VN. Barring that, I dream of one day commissioning a short comic, even if done page by page over the course of a year or something.
>>
>>1455867
Requests are completely up to the whim of the person drawing them and are under no obligation. Commissions allow you to single out a particular artist you like and give all the specifications, plus the quality of whatever you pay as opposed to something that could just be a quickie.

A request is a gamble with no so great odds. A commission is a guarantee.
>>
>>1455867
requests are special. For one thing, you only take one if you want to. That means they're for bored artists looking for a prompt, and they are paid in recognition and copious thanks. plus free publicity. I have made probably close to 800 dollars over the years PURELY because of some years spent avidly building up a portfolio in drawthreads, of material that people might want more of. a nice variety, a range, a showoff of improvement...
>>
>>1455867
because one is a hired job and the other volenteer work (and basically a raffle)
I don't see how this isn't like any other job. just don't commission then
>>
>>1455697
On average I commission people about two times every three months. It's been awhile since I gave a pitch to this thread but I do check regularly for new artists.
>>1455867
It may be free but it's definitely a gamble whether an artist will take it and if they do they might monkey paw it.

>>1455867
The difference is; with a commission, you get what you want from the artist you want.
With a request, you get what a random artist wants, and you might not even get that.

Pic not related, we've just not had any porn in a while.
>>
>>1455867
>people in the /aco/ drawthread get free art while you have to pay?

my fetishes are too bizarre and no one has ever drawn them for me for free. also, i get to choose the artist and get the quality that i want, rather than relying on luck in drawthreads.
>>
>>1455867
I won't really take anything from the draw thread too seriously, like I would a commission that someone is paying for. It's usually just when I'm bored, or just want to practice something.
>>
>>1455867
It's also a way to support an artist you like.

Stop thinking like a parasite and you may have one day the money to pay good money for guaranteed good work.
>>
>>1455697
>>1446827
I get commissioned approximately 16 times a month
>>
>>1455697
I commission an artist whenever I can. I've only commission one so far but done it multiple times. I mostly just like their style and giving them money. I mostly do it for fun, but I try to change up the commission each time with a different character doing a different thing. I like to give them a challenge.

Can't bring myself to commission porn though. Lewds maybe, but outright porn is out of the question.
>>
>>1455867
The artist I commission is pricing them at an amount that's practically free for me. They've also been really cool with my commissions so I'll keep giving them money.

I get joy out of blessing people. Making others happy makes me happy.

So, I've always been a good artist, and a pervert, but I'm terrible at pursuing art as a profession. I'm at a time in my life where I want to follow my dreams instead of settling for the mediocrity and comfort of a steady job. I think doing porn commissions is a good way to start, but I want to ask a few questions from you more experienced artists out there.

First, I need to know if a regular paypal account can receive payments. Or do I need a merchant's account to get that option, and the regular account is just for consumers? The website isn't very specific on this matter and further googling doesn't give me a satisfactory answer.
>>
>>1462871
I guess my next question would be about blogs. I'm 28 years old and I've never had a blog before. What website are most pornographic artists using to post their images and such? I assume these services are free, and act as a convenient portfolio of the artist's work. Tumblr is something I only read or hear people talking about-- I don't really know how it's supposed to work, or other similar websites, for that matter.
>>
>>1462871
I take writing commissions on occasion, and receive payments without needing to upgrade yet to a merchant's account, so presumably you're good there.

>>
>>1464438
No, it wouldn't. Not with art of that quality. It looks simple but a lot of shit goes into it to ensure it still looks good. if it took them 5 hours, that's 10 dollars an hour if they charge 50 bucks and that isn't good pay for a dayjob, let alone a skilled trade.
>>
>>1464417
It doesn't look like a particularly special quality to me. It's not even shaded. It's nice art and all, but not at the top tier in terms of anatomy, attractiveness, etc.. maybe second to top tier.
in terms of how long it looks to make, it looks like about a half-hour drawing at most.
i'm not knockin' this person, that's way better than I draw.. but it's not 30 dollars better than I draw, y'dig? it's about 8-10 dollars better than I draw. and that would take me 20 dollars and a bit over an hour because I'm not that good yet at effortlessly sketching. but people at this skill level pretty much are

>a half-hour drawing at most

People don't just spit out things that look like that, they look like that because it takes time and a trained eye. you guys are fucking retards, that guy up there is selling his shit for two fifty and he's getting fucking robbed lmao but I guess that's what you happens when you start drawing just to desperately collect pocket change from art people jerk off to. I hope that guy doesn't lower his prices.
>>
>>1464604
yes, it takes time and a trained eye to learn how to be able to spit that out in a half hour.
look, I was nagging some people earlier to raise their prices. it's only fair that I do the same when I see one a bit overly high. To do otherwise would sully the previous advice and make it a conflict of interest (as if i was only having them raise their price so I didn't get undercut). Suggesting this one lower the price does me no personal good at all, I only want to see more art from this artist, and that means more affordable commissions.
now if the dance card is full, so to speak, then clearly i'm wrong and this is the perfect price to meet the demand. But something tells me... it's not.

desu senpai I think artists ought to be paid more. they are providing a unique creation only they can give and it took them 10+ years to hone the skill (actually, learning never ends). yet strippers and babysitters can easily earn more
then again, I am pretty biased.

in the end, demand determines price, not quality. We should be glad, too, because there's a lot of things that take a ton of work to make, but if they actually got paid fairly, we'd never be able to afford them. like.. animation. or videogames.

It's not just super established people like InCase, either.

And of course any other sales/commissions would be on top of these numbers, and at this level of fame, you can pretty much charge whatever you want for comms.

So yeah! You can definitely make decent money off porn, if you're lucky and/or skilled enough.
>>
>>1465369

>>

idk, I just hit up a few profiles on hentaifoundry for these. You can probably poke around deviantart or tumblr for sfw stuff if you want.
>>
>>1465334
I didn't say it was good. I said it's that or nothing, sometimes.
history is paved with people doing what they do for the maximum money that can be afforded to them, with the maximum safety and protection that it's worth providing.. until the economy improves and industry grows.. if they work hard and build up their industry, it'll get to a point where it makes enough money to support the workers and give them some safety nets as well. but if you just say 'this isnt fair, i refuse!' then it won't grow. it'll disappear.

Adding a second character is double the price minus $5, every other character is the original price but every additional character is price minus $10.

i.e. three sketched full-body characters with no background would total $25, with $15 being for the one character and $10 for the other two.

Sorry 'bout the math, it's probably wrong, I didn't think it wouldn't fit otherwise. Still working out the kinks.

No problem

“Oh… I’ve missed you baby,” she cooed as her hips began to rock, “I’ve missed you so bad.”

“Me too, and Mmm, that looks fun.”

She felt another finger slip into her ass. Normally she was against this. After all, she wasn’t really big into anal, but damned if this didn’t feel good. She moved until she was barely on the seat, her breathing was hard, her feet up on the desk, and she began to moan out.

“Fuck… David, Fuck… Right there… Oh God right there, anytime you want it baby, anytime you want my ass… Mmmm…”

She felt her heart racing, her need growing, and those fingers worked hard to get her exactly where she needed to go. Soon her t-shirt was up, off, and on the floor, “David… I’m so close…”

She felt it go a little longer, the fingers working hard, and then she felt the first stirrings of an orgasm. It hit hard, threatening to completely knock her out. Two weeks of nothing, and damn, was this a good one. Her eyes opened after a bit, she smacked her lips, and then she noticed the red indicator light of broadcasting signal was lit up.

She looked around and saw that her foot was resting on the broadcast button for the microphone. She pulled back her heel, and once it came back the light went off. Desperately, she hoped that no one was listening at that moment.

(Naturally that's not the full story, just one of the scenes from it.)

Ive gotten a number of good requests for free as well as some crappy ones. I certainly appreciate anyone who draws for me, I do but commissioning not only insures a certain amount of quality but also that it even gets done. The last time I got a request done for free was over a year ago. It came out great but if you really want a piece done you're better off commissioning.

More to the point if all you do is spam the same requests every draw thread all you're doing is pissing people off. Artists tend to congregate so if they do your request the first time chances are they aren't going to do it the next 10 times you ask. Jesus fuck remember when self bumping wasn't discouraged? That was a nightmare

One person scammed here: I got my chargeback fees reversed, but I'm guessing it's because I got lucky with who I was talking to at the time. If you ask to talk to someone in the disputes dept. or whatever it's called then you could possibly get the fee removed. It may not solve the whole problem, but it's good to let them know that you're not the one at fault. Apparently they've contacted the guy's bank, but haven't gotten a response yet. I was told that all I could pretty much do is wait at this point, and make sure my account isn't in the red. Hopefully the money should be refunded after a while.
I dunno if this'll serve any purpose, just make sure to call paypal I guess

For a simple blink it would be $40. For things that are complex like bouncing breasts or sex it would be around $60-$150 for a 3 second gif loop.

If I knew specifically what you wanted animated I would be able to give a more accurate price.

Depends on the time taken and the quality/style of the art, to most people, though ultimately it's up to the artist themselves what they price. Probably best to go with your gut at first with what you think your stuff is worth, then adjust accordingly or listen and see if others start advising a slight change. I'm not an artist, so I'm not an expert source of advice, though.

What's some examples of your work?

Here is an example of some work.
Also here is my tumblr I made to do drawthread requests

At the very least you want to make minimum wage. I'd start with a baseline of $10/hour and adjust from there.

Do some drawthread requests, and time yourself to see how long it takes you. Note down the times for each stage. Do about 5 different pictures to get average times from, as each picture will be different.

>every jackass thinks they're worth $1 per 100 words now.
>$5 a page
assuming a page takes an hour, that's $5/hour
I don't do writing commissions but that sounds severely underpaid to me. not even counting the time to research said characters.

Thanks for the advice!

More money for the artists then.
>>

Looks like you have issues with more realistic faces.

Seems to be a nonissue with more cartoony stuff though.

Bodies seem all over the place, although that's not necessarily a bad thing. Basically I as a commissioning would have no idea what i would be getting from you if I commissioned something from you, regardless of an artstyle.

>>1474355
Used to be 1 dollar per 150 words for me, recently changed that to 125 words. I was just happily surprised there were people who wanted to pay for my stuff when they convinced me to accept comms.

What kind of commission does this fall under? Normal sketch or rough sketch?

I tried to email you. But yahoo said that your email address didn't exist

It's a rough sketch actually. Regular sketches require some pen work

I definitely understand that animation takes time and money, but the point is that it seems inconsistent. If a ~.5 second loop actually costs 150, I'd imagine something six times that would be considerably more expensive. Or if three seconds actually costs 150, half a sec should probably be cheaper.

Any particular reason you changed your sheet and e-mail?

and you see why animation is prohibitively expensive
hell, just getting a 'storyboard' so to speak, or as the transformation fetish people call it, a 'series', is stupidly expensive.

The aesthetics of those activities gross me out. I now realize I might have to loosen my standards on fetishes if I want to actually get commissions.

No. I'm working on getting a portfolio page going, though. Would tumblr be good for that? Trying to promote myself as an artist online is totally new to me.

Also, here's some new art.

Hyper muscle, hyper voluptuous, hyper cocks, hyper tits, basically any size that impedes your ability to maneuver your environment.

If was an artist i would use both tumblr and Hentai Foundry.

At the very least, get a tumblr ready ASAP.

Okay...

I'm going to guess from your statement that you've been burned before. And yes, most writers do think they're worth at least one dollar per one hundred words. The reason behind that is that most competitive writing that happens for Magazines, Ezines, and short story collection anthologies usually at least pay a minimum of five cents per word. But, I feel that you might have been burned, so I'll do you one 1000 word commission for free.
