How do you even begin to approach designing a robot character? I feel like you have to have a specific kind of brain to even bother, the intricacies can be maddening, you'd have to basically be able to think a little bit like an actual engineer, right?

To start with, you need to come up with their purpose/job first, then design the robot around that.

Consider the visual and other traits that are synonymous with their purpose (writing them down helps a lot). Say for example you wanted your robot to be a secretary, their design would probably include a pencil skirt (or something that looks like it), high heels, glasses, and a clipboard. She'd need to be slender so that she can easily navigate an office environment, and she'd also have to have a very kind and approachable face and personality to ensure clients are comfortable around her. Maybe she's got 6 fingers on each hand to make it easier to operate a keyboard? Maybe she's got a thin aerial on her head for better phone reception?

That's how I go about it anyway. Designing a robot is so much easier once you know what it is you want them to be and do. I find it really difficult to just 'make' a robot on the spot without any context or background.

You can update it rarely/ avoid interacting with fans and nothing bad will happen, your blog won't be noticed by a lot of people but I think that's not a huge issue if you're not an artist with a big following in the first place. Those things should only be an issue after earning lots of followers.
