One thing I don't usually see mentioned anywhere: how big are most digital commissions, dimension-wise? I'd imagine it's pretty variable depending on the artist, but is there a common range of sizes?

I've done a few that were around postcard sized (approx 4"x6" @300dpi, or 1200 x 1800px), but would it be preferable to go larger, to 8.5"x11" @300dpi (2550 x 3300px)?
>>
>>1318934
I usually go pretty big (around 2000x2500 or 2500x3000). Clients haven't had a preference so far that I've known of, but I figured a bigger resolution image might be better to have.

>>

Be as descriptive as possible about what you want. Be open to the artist's suggestions. Don't give any deadlines, let the artist work on their own time. Don't insist on subjects the artist doesn't like.

Still doing buy one get one half off until the end of April
>>
>>1319307
DO:
Include all pertinent details of your commission; characters involved, what you want them doing, if there's a particular pose or angle you want, etc. The more detailed reference you provide, the better. Of course, most artists don't mind being given free reins to come up with stuff themselves, but if you already know what you want, mention it.

Read the artist's commission details to see if they have any subjects they don't want to work with.

Ask how long the artist expects to spend on your piece if they don't mention it themselves.

DON'T:
Try to convince an artist to draw something that's on their "won't draw" list.
>>
>>1319349
>>1319370
Thanks fellas

As a follow up: What sort of details would be important for the artist to know for the work? Would they need a full outline?
>>
>>1318713
Lol, you fucking suck so bad.

How does one get so delusional that these elementary school -tier samples should be worth even $10?
>>
>>1319392
How does one get so beta faggot to make shitty comments about amateur artists
>>
>>1319384
It depends on the specific image, really. If it's a subject that you know the artist knows how to pull off in the way you like, you can usually leave it at "have X and Y doing Z" and end up with a result you'll like.
If you're less sure, mention the kinds of things you like about the subject matter or the charm points of the individual characters.
If in doubt, more detail will almost never hurt.
>>
>>1319431
Thanks for the advice.

Now, off to please Slannesh with LEWD sacrifice.
>>
>>1319384
giving reference can go beyond just describing your characters, you can find a picture of someone in a pose you like for example and use that as reference. even a screen-cap of something that happens in a video you like

I'll be 100% honest here. Anyone who charges $25 or greater for a sketch is out of their minds. I've seen some free deliveries in drawthreads that I'd pay money for that looks higher quality than some of the art in these commission sheets.

Feel free to charge what you want. If people pay for it, then make your money; but just...damn. At the point that I pay $20 or more for a sketch then I might as well draw it on my own. Thats like a full tank of gas right there.

Once again, it's your money; pay for it if you want it bad enough
>>
>>1319643
i know more well known artists charge more not just based on skill but on how busy they are. I feel like 30ish dollar range for a fully colored nsfw picture is pretty fair... idk
>>
>>1319661
Fully colored yes, but for a rough sketch seems kinda like highway robbery
>>
>>1319643
When are people going to learn that cost of living, and thus the price people charge for their skills, is relative? Or that price of a product can increase if the demand for it increases?

And you saw a high quality free delivery, so what? Do you think it means that person can afford to work for free all the time, or that everyone should be able to match them? Not everyone can afford to spend their skills on a pastime that doesn't pay their bills, and complaining that someone is too expensive for YOU based on YOUR income or location isn't going to persuade them. And if you feel their pricing is too high based on the principle that "sketches shouldn't even be that expensive," go take that rhetoric and apply it to literally any independent field that requires high manhours of labor for a custom product and realize how impractical you're being.

As someone looking to break into the adult commission game, what are some good price ranges? I was thinking sketch($5), linework($10), flat color($15), complex color($30), and then full paint with bg($50-$100)? Does this seem reasonable?
>>
>>1320185
don't forget to charge for extra characters, I don't know if people would agree with me but I think $15 is a reasonable base price for a colored simple sfw piece. Backgrounds are a plus if you can do them, it can be your selling point entirely sometimes, but that really depends on how good you are, maybe?

Your tumblr only allows messages from people you follow, so what's a good way of getting in contact?
>>
>>1321622
So what does the winner get after winning these bids? The character itself? The design? All the information and rights to it? I've never understood this.
>>
>>1321652
Not Lilith, but to answer your question, it's essentially rights to intellectual property. It becomes your character who you can then commission other artists to draw without stepping on any toes. A number of artists won't even draw other people's OCs without permission from the original artist / whomever "adopted" it.
>>
>>1321652
usually you own the character's design, that is you can have other people draw you things based on that character

That's...........interesting. I've never thought of it that way. Well, I don't judge. If people have the money for it then I won't stop them. Hopefully they have the art skill or the money (For commissions) to back it up after purchasing said character; otherwise it's meaningless.

I use a pencil brush for that image and so its not nearly as crisp as it could be. And the reason why i charge more for inked work is that it take more time to ink something then to imply line it with a pencil brush.

I'm drafting out a commission page, but I can't help but feel that I'm underselling myself on the prices here.
The sketches will stay the same price if I change everything else though, since they're pretty easy for me to make.
>>
>>1322016
Scratch that, maybe the prices are fine, I don't know, but anyway I still want everyone's opinion on my draft
>>
can anyone recommend a good artist to draw a rather sadistic 6-8 page comic strip based in zootopia. Normally I dont do the furry shit, but I'd love to sponsor some cruelty on cute action.
>>
>>1322016
What price level will work for you depends on a whole bunch of other factors than just if it looks nice. Try these out and see how it goes.

Maybe organize your list of love and hate alphabetically so people can quickly look up how you feel about their specific topic.
>>
>>1322016
Underselling not, actually its quite a lot for a first timer, what you need to do is try to grab commissioners and not to scare them off.
>>
>>1319076
>>1321156
Your paintings have a lot of potential
>>
>>1322353
How do you mean? I assume you don't think they're entirely living up to their potential, or you'd just say they were good looking.
>>
>>1322078
you'll have beetter luck with that on FA but a 6-8 page comic will set you back a few hundred dollars. I'd say around 400 at best
>>
SO an artist I commissioned from here has gone dark for a few weeks and hasn't responded to anything I've sent them. How long should I wait to chargeback do you guys think?
>>
>>1322847
Have you commissioned this person before? Had they been giving out regular WIPs before going silent? Do you know if they've been active elsewhere on the Internet?
>>
>>1322847
What's their name? Maybe someone here knows them.
>>
>>1322939
They gave me one WIP and a very very very rough sketch when we were hammering out the details and I have not commissioned them before. They don't seem to have much of an internet presence.

>>1323065
Not gonna name and shame here mostly because I think it's more about being new than trying to fuck me over, plus they still have time to respond before I chargeback. New artists don't need that stigma following them yet IMO since everyone makes mistakes.
>>
>>1323068

Dude no if it's been weeks then they're probably fucking you. It does not take that long to respond to an email saying "Sorry, I got busy with real life" or some shit
>>
>>1323150
Yeah, it's not like you can't just pay them again if they contact you and go "I'm sorry, I was kidnapped by aliens but I can finish your commission now".
Maybe send them an email saying you'll do a chargeback if they don't respond, first.

>>
>>1321657
That's gotta be the dumbest thing I ever heard.
I know it's not the same thing but I've done a lot of designs for people's character, i.e. Being the first to ever create its look. I've seen tons of new commissions using my designs and never once was I included in any conversations.
But regardless, what's the big idea about 'intellectual property' it's not as though your Rp character is going to bring fame or money, and if someone did steal it you couldn't do anything about it except complain that someone commissioned more art for you while pretending to be you.

Question for drawfags, if you charge per character and got a request for a sex scene where the girl is just riding the guy's dick, does the guy count as a character or a prop? Even if he's faceless and generic?

>>
>>1323285
Depends on how much work I'd have to do. If all that was visible was his thighs and peepee (like if she was riding him reverse cowgirl and we see it from in front of her), I wouldn't charge full price.
>>
>>1323292

>>1322016 here, still technically under construction, so I might be open to discount
>>
>>1323285
That's a pretty good question actually, I should probably add something about that to my sheet. Sort of echoing what others have already said, I wouldn't charge extra. I would only charge if it's a fuller view of the character or if they're actively interacting with the other. I guess it just depends on the amount of detail, though I find the idea of charging extra for floating dick kinda funny
>>
>>1323285

Ive seen a lot of artists who do both. Ive asked for genrics fucking the girls and since it was the same anyways decided to rework a few pics to be another character.

Yeah I figured that might be what it was, which is understandable at $20. Honestly I would just charge more for the higher quality stuff, and set it as an option like "detailed painting" or something on your commission sheet.
Out of curiosity what would you price a more polished version of >>1321156 ?
>>
>>1324948
Can't say I'm surprised - client seemed like the type who enjoyed having different artists do their own take on his ocs.

>>1325024
Yeah, I've been thinking the same thing - rough vs polished paintings.
I'm not entirely sure about >>1321156 - it's a fairly simple nude figure without a background, so I think around $40 (that is, a $20 price difference, or another hour and a half spent rendering) is as far as I could take it before I really hit the wall of flaws that aren't just a question of time spent. For comparison, >>1324938 was $70.
>>
>>1325078
Gotcha. It was $70 because of the background right? That looks like a detailed background so I'm assuming it was a $20 + $50 going by your sheet. Unless I'm reading that wrong.
Either way if you decide to make the more detailed stuff official I'd definitely be interested.
>>
>>1325173
Your reading sounds about right - that particular image was a case of the client going "I'll pay you fifty bucks to paint this" and then going "I'll pay you twenty bucks to spend some more time on it" when I presented him with the version I'd spent 50 dollars worth of my time on.
But yes, the character alone I'd price at $50 (more than a nude character, because she's got a pretty complicated outfit).

I'd be happy to paint you something for similar prices - what exactly do you mean by "official"?
>>
>>1325206
Oh my bad, sounded like you weren't really sure if you wanted to advertise the full painted stuff yet.
I'll shoot you an email or message you through tumblr
>>
>>1325309

I'd prefer email if it's the same to you.

Just wanted to throw this up because it's been forever since the thread for the Keychain of Creation was put up, or a general webcomic thread.

It's by Jack Cayless, used to do Chimneyspeak and R.E.D.D. now working on a side-scrolling Contra styled Visual Novel called Miskatonic.

He does "Cute Monster Girl" commissions on occasion, and I thought Marena and Secret qualified. Enjoy!

Just finished this commission yesterday.

https://placeholdname.tumblr.com/
>>
>>1317772
Just curious but how much extra income do you creative types make from commissioning? Is it worthwhile in the end compared to like some shitty job at Burger King?
>>
>>1330005
It is more enjoyable than working retail or food service, but not getting out of the house can do damage to your psyche.
You're basically going to be a next level neet, so you should plan some outings every week so you don't get stir-crazy.
>>
>>1330005
As for income, it all depends on how much you work. I've made about 2,000 dollars in less than two weeks working most of my waking hours. I'm not even that well known, and if you build up a following/reputation you can charge a lot more and make probably 150% of that.
Other times I barely do anything and make a few hundred a month.

The trouble with being an artist is that it's very easy to get discouraged and self-loathing over your drawings. You can get too picky and self conscious making it difficult to find motivation. The nice thing about flipping burgers is that you don't have to waste so much mental energy creating a completely original product every time you grill a patty. Menial and repetitive labor can actually be pretty relaxing for people who work creatively. As an artist, I am thinking of picking up a side job just to do stuff like that.
The problem with doing art is that you rarely feel finished or satisfied, and I think people crave stability.

Just consider what kind of mindset you have. Doing art makes me crave things like going outside, gardening, cooking, raising animals, etc. Be sure to satiate those needs, and don't just think about the money. Take care of yourself mentally, because it's much more satisfying than having extra cash.
>>
>>1330005
Somewhere between a couple hundred and several hundred quid a month. I could probably get a lot more work if I advertised myself better.

Cost of living is high around here and I'd make a lot more money at any kind of regular part time job, but it lets me decide my own hours and the things I learn drawing ballsacks for people are a lot more relevant to the things I'm actually passionate about doing than the things I'd learn by flipping burgers.
>>
Any artists interesting in helping out with a game project that I have been working on? I had an artist previously who seems to have gone MIA and now I'm at a loss for assets.
I have a handful of sketches that need coloring and cleaning from the artist that I could send to help you get an idea of what I am looking for.
>>
>>1330667
> send to help you get an idea of what I am looking for.
Wouldn't it be easier to just make an imgur album and link it here? Then anyone who's interested could just go check it out.
>>
>>1330676
I've never made an imgur album before but thanks for the idea.
http://imgur.com/a/1Yi9J
Basically some of the sketches are faceless so that I can re use models with different expressions.
>>
>>1330667
>>1330681
So, is this for a VN or something? Just still images? No sprites? No animations?
Honestly these sketches are pretty rough, and a bit too simple to be worth salvaging, in my opinion.
As long as you pay your artist and not just promise them "a cut" when you game (possibly) launches, then I don't see a problem.
>>
>>1330773
The art was done for free by some anon I met through 4chan, which is why I don't mind that the artist is busy and hasn't been online.
Also they are just sketches I intended to get a generous artistic anon to help out coloring, since I am currently using these sketches as temp sprites for the game.
The game is a renpy based VN trainer type game. I dont intend to add animations and such. The game is entirely for fun, so the most I promise is a thanks and links to them in the credits on the chance someone else making a game would pay them for art.
This isn't some big budget thing, but I have had enough support to motivate me to work on it.

I recently got into the commissioning business. I've been doing it for 5 months now. Compared to retail and food service it's far less stressful but unless you have an established web of followers/clients its hard to make a livable wage off of it. If you are just starting out expect to get a side job just to get by. I'd love to be able to do this as my main source of income but it's just not possible at the moment. On an average month, I maybe make an extra 200 dollars. But that's about it.
I will say this though if you are looking to increase your artistic skill and speed rapidly commissions will push you in the right direction.

I make a little under $300 every month from commissions. Ive been considering creating a RedBubble shop to bring in a little more.

Or even a part time job to do with art on the side. Its either that or raise my prices, which honestly im planning on doing in my next commission sheet.

I hardly get any sleep because i spend what little free time I have not at school working on art. And im very addicted to small details so that cuts into it too.

Art is not easy. Be a security guard instead.

Current favorite who I'm pretty sure is open is Dracounreformed.tumblr.com . I have a long list of recommended artists, but for animus and cratoon grill, Draco takes the cake. If you want extra options, I also suggest: Orangeorangy.tumblr.com is super friendly, affrodable, fast, and probably open, but I find his anatomy kind of boxy. Mini-wa.tumblr.com will be open saturday, and is pretty damned animu. They're doing a new coloring technique, so I don't know what color turnaround will be, but sketches are very fast.

>>1334810
Juicydemon.tumblr.com just started monetizing animations, recently, and may or may not be offering deals as they're still nascent on the scene. The previously referred to Draco also has started fiddling in animation, but I don't think is selling, yet.

I charge 8 bucks per character, no secret charges or anything, just 8 bucks. Paypal oinly.
The character will be fully colored but no colored background since well, I'm just a cheap porn artist and I don't like to render so I keep it cartoony.

I'm most focused on size fetishes such as increase in certain body parts and stuff.
I don't draw lolis, shota, furries.
I sometimes draw bizarre things are okay but I mostly would draw them for the lulz not

How much money? Comics take a lot of effort for anything decently drawn, including backgrounds, perspective drawing, composition, and expressive poses.
I'd say you're looking at at least 150+ per page.

Okay, I've got a question for artists/commissioners. I'm thinking on opening commissions, /d/ fetishes will probably be costing a bit extra. (not more than 10% if it's in the 'maybe' list tier). Would you consider this a good business practice? There's not much I wouldn't draw, but I was thinking about it as I was going to do a sample with something in that nature
An amputee, but for me I think it isn't that outlandish compared to what I've seen.
How do you decide on prizes along fetishes? Or do you ask for discretion if it's a thing youd rather not be associated with (loli/shota coming to mind?)
>>
>>1338797
Don't draw anything you don't like drawing, since you don't know what exactly is what excites you of a /d/ fetish the drawing can come out very lacklusting and tastless
>>
>>1338797
Does it take more time and effort than vanilla stuff? Is it less use to you since you can't use it to catch the interest of other potential clients?
It seems like there's a pretty logical argument to be made for having higher prices on fetish stuff. As for how high to price it, well, go as high as you can while still making as much money as you want. It's gonna take some experimentation.

And yeah, it's definitely a good idea to keep quiet about certain things. At the very least, have any fetish galleries off of your main site.

>>1338804
Eh, that's not my experience. I draw lots of things that do nothing for me, like rape or scat or pedophilia. I haven't had any complaints so far, and my fetish clients keep coming back for more.

what am I supposed to write in "won't draw"

I feel like the only thing I'm really adverse to is... diapers, and that's it. I'll draw literally anything else, scat, inflation, lolis/shotas, furry, gore, whatever, just not diapers. But if I put that by itself it'll look weird.
>>
>>1340304
>But if I put that by itself it'll look weird.
IMO you're overthinking that. Literally nobody will care if you're disgusted by one fetish or three.

If it really is a problem, then maybe mention that you reserve the right to refuse any commission you don't want to do?
Or you could mention that you won't draw more than 5 corrections of a single image after finishing it.
Or just mention fetish that would force you to do extra work: for example to draw feral you would have to do some research about animal anatomy.

oh. I'm gonna be honest. with the anonymous requests i intentionally avoid doing elaborated things. that's mostly what's on my blog. but i don't have too much problem with perspective. it just takes time.

>>1344875
According to professional artists: commissioners can wait even 6 months to get the final image.
Pic related is an industry standard.
>>
>>1344875
As long as you keep them up to speed on what's going on, most people aren't going to mind that much (especially if they haven't spent that much money.) Hell, even if you do every commission's sketch, then every lineart, then every color, etc., at least you'll have something to show every person.

The worst thing you can do is just say nothing, because that makes people think you're either lazy or incompetent or you don't care about their commission. Update people every couple weeks at most.
>>
>>1344875
I think if you're delayed by more than a week compared to the time you told them, you should let them know.
If you haven't given them a time frame, just let them contact you if they get worried. If someone contacts you, answer them straight away.
>>
>>1342888
It's the "no male centric" rule essentially. Pretty much means the lady gets most of the space and the dude is like barely present

What about something like this?
>>
>>1344980
yes but it's not a must. I turn in commission within days, for me it really depends on how fast the client responds, and how much changes they ask for, if any.
>>
>>1344875
why the fuck do artist do this?
close commissions until the backlog is almost done then re-open, it's that simple. why take someones money and make them wait a month?
>>
>>1345219
Out of curiosity, how do you feel about artists that tell people they have a month-long queue, make them wait a month and then take their money?
>>
>>1345276
you know paypal has a partial payment option? you could send out an invoice and have a minimum amount to be paid, this way you can get a deposit and people who have to wait a month wont back out. And you also save their spot that way without getting paid in full, then having to complete the work when you've already spent the money.
>>
>>1345276
If they tell them then it's no problem. I would never keep a queue that long in the first place but there's no issue so long as the commissioner knows what he's getting into.
>>
>>1345378
Is there a reason to do this, though? Don't you have to pay a fee to invoice people on Paypal? Won't skipping it save you a dollar or two?
>>
>>1345421
well paypal is tough now on how you get paid for things, they also don't allow you to sell porn so you have to word it as just artwork. Also, past a certain amount you HAVE to pay taxes on it, so yeah sending invoices can save you a lot of grief later on

Not good with animals or anthros, tried before but they don't come out as well because I don't have them really well studied (don't have evidence of this, they were all sketches and got lost in files). If you still want to take the risk, I'm open to being contacted.

>>1345992

So I'm new to commissions, and recently I got a few too many really quickly, I think it ended up being over 20 in less than 2 weeks. They take a few days a piece and some are multiples that I have to do over time, so this means some later people on the waitlist have been waiting about a month and a half, and the ones I have yet to do have to wait longer still.

I don't take money until I actually start doing the work for their commission, and I've closed commissions down since, but I'm wondering how bad this reflects on me.

Obviously I've decided when I re-open to do it by slots, but I still have the rest of the list first
>>
>>1347120
I think if you explain that much, most of the people who've been waiting would understand. Those who don't probably aren't the kind of customers you'd want to have in the first place.
>>
>>1347120
It does make you seem a bit disorganized, but the most honest way to deal with that is to make a queue so everyone can see where they are

For example:
Guy1 (Chun-li gangbang): Finished
Guy2 (OC blowjob): Lineart
Guy3 (Pokegirls): Waitlist

And you edit/reblog your queue every time after you finish a bit, so everyone knows where they are
>>
I want to start posting my art on tumblr and start doing commissions, but I'm having trouble with choosing a name.

Any tips?
How did you choose your name?
>>
>>1347360
Pick random syllables. Random words you like just strung together
>>
>>1347360
A Tumblr name is a sacred thing. You can't just pluck a name out of the aether all willy-nilly. You need to journey to the mountaintop and obtain your name from the old wise man sitting there.
>>
>>1347360
Look around for random objects in your room.
Pick one, and then select three random numbers.
