I don't feel like Shad has any reason to improve his art.

I understand that from some technical objective standpoint he could improve, but that's not what I'm getting at. He produces a very specific product and it so happens he makes the best quality of that product. And let's be honest, it's not that bad.

Unless many people step up and start producing the same amount of content but of better quality, he's got no reason to improve. He has nearly the entirety of his potential audience's attention and until enough people step up and take that away from him, why should he worry about how he does things?

The things said about Shad can be said about Jay Naylor's writing. It's a proven formula that pays the rent and nobody is actually doing it better with better art.

No offense, every artist sucks in their own way, but it's because they rely so much on copying poses they don't learn how to find it and learn the techniques that they can use in how to draw it themselves. I first learned of Shad through the Hank Hill comic. I thought he had great potential. And that's the key word here: potential. He's always had the potential to do better, but he'd much rather ride the wave of controversy. The only reason he's improved is because of natural progression as he's tried to keep up with the controversy. His backgrounds are amazing and he'd do well in the animation industry with them, but he's screwed himself with everything else he's done. Between the racism, sexism, homophobia, reversal on the homophobia with the traps and futas, pissing on other internet identities, and the constant feuds he gets into with people on Twitter, he's destroyed any chance he ever had at doing things professionally. And that's not counting the bullshit with him getting kicked out of art school and the fallout from that, because he could've recovered. His shading is ugly because all tones on the skin are too soft. No matter how hard the light hits the body it's always like he took the waterbrush tool and mixed it to be entirely even. Skin has subsurface scattering and different diffusion properties on different parts of the body, so skin nearer the light is going to have harsher shadows than skin further away. Depending on the warmth of the light it's going to be an almost direct shadow/highlight difference or a slow change, but never a soft blend like he does. Put your hand under a lamp and move it around and see what I mean.
