Anyone got some good documentation on using random dice rolls in renpy? I want to script a random chance for the MC to get pick-pocketed in the markets, after which you have the chance to chase the thief down and totally have consensual sex with her in the missionary position for the sole purpose of procreation. (As a bonus she is totally of legal age and doesn't look like JB at all)

How can I make that happen? I was imagining something like a random D100 dice roll anytime you enter the market scene, if the number rolled is higher or lower than a given target (which could be altered by other factors, such as how much money you have, more money = more likely to be robbed) then the pickpocketing event occurs.
Any ideas? A lot of official Renpy documentation is flagged as outdated. The wrong symbols in the money/inventory system documentation fucked me around for a week.

If you want the dice roll bit, then I would always say keep to 20, as 100 often leads to slower loading and limitations within the Renpy system.

I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I've managed to get pretty far by just copying other people's code but now I'm getting into the more complex stuff, I'm really out of my depth.
Since most Renpy documentation assumes you understand a lot of the commands, it's pretty opaque to the casual user. I'm the sort of guy who needs to understand why something works to use it well, and there doesn't seem to be anywhere that can bridge that gap for me.

No worries bro. I had to learn a lot of python from scratch, but I commission a guy to help me with things outside of my own knowledge. He never charges too much, and once it's done, I learn from the code by reading through and testing out parts to see what does what.

I always find people making rpg systems in renpy a little confusing; but they are a fantastic resource to learn from.

In unit, for random numbers you add a seed, and you always get the same number over and over unless the seed changes, so you need to keep updating it. My guess is renpy is as fucked up, so you should probably look for that

Read that, if not again, your random number will not be as random as you would like. Generating pseudo random numbers is pretty hard, and real random numbers even more (and imposible for what you want, since you usually need specialized hardware for that)

I used this but changed it to a 1 in 5 chance, ran the scene 32 times, got mugged twice.
The two muggings happened in the first ten playthroughs, then I didn't see another mugging in twenty rolls. Got a third around roll 40.

I think this will suffice for what I want. When people are talking about where they are in their play through, someone will mention that jb streetrat they caught and loved tenderly, others will never have seen her and may feel motivated to go back to the market until they catch her.

I sure hope I can enjoy fapping to my own work.

Like I and others have said, the number generator isn't great, but better than nothing and does kind of work; considering it requires little to no extra coding.

Simple is sometimes better; its a renpy game after all. Too much heavy coding pulls up pickling errors all the time.

Sorry I can't help more but I'm limited by my own shear lack of skill when it comes to coding.

This is wrong. You want to seed your random function once per session, at the start. Usually no argument is even needed, but if you to pass the seed, make sure its something dynamic like a timestamp (unless you really need a reproducable result).
Reseeding the random function each time will not give you "better" random numbers, but a fucked up distribution. I.e. you most likely just shot yourself in to foot.

Pro-tip: get your hands on a gaussian/normally distributed random number generator and work with mean and standard deviation (instead of min, max). Most things are better modelled with a normal distribution (e.g. height, weight, random gains/loss, ...).

What's going on with Korra Trainer? When I left it really seemed like Trainerfan was making progress. He seemed pretty determined to at least get something out.

As for 4 Houses, it's an ambitious project and these things take time. I don't doubt they're working very hard on it. I'm prone to working behind the scenes a lot myself, and I can certainly understand stepping back for a bit to get things in order before talking about it.

One of the first things you learn as a creator is that you're never really finished with any project. You just reach a point where you're forced to let go, and in your mind you're certain that you've given your audience something deeply flawed that you really wish you could have just one more shot at editing.

On the surface, these games seem incredibly simple to create, and in a sense they are. But these projects are massive undertakings, even the small ones like mine. They take hundreds of hours to complete with no real hope of compensation. Akabur started out making comic strips, and he worked on the first Princess Trainer for more than a year before releasing it (and spawning an entirely new genre of game in the process). It should be no wonder that so many wonderfully creative people here just find themselves overwhelmed, with no real support, and make the decision to step back from their projects for a bit. Writing novels is very similar in that regard.
